2012 Whitetail, Lets see yours

Yup if you easterners would just let those little fellows grow you too would have deer like out west. Another year passes and I'm not tagged out again. Well last day got me a big old lone doe great eater. Could have shot a spiker that day but decided you never know he could be the next big thing.
Cheers

Naa, its an unintended consequence of the eastern count. By the time they count to 10 the buck leaves. That's more headstart than a whitetail needs.

Believe it or not I was going to pass this guy up because I was hunting a 200 B&C class typical. I only heard through the grape vine about the 200 class buck, however it did come from a most reliable source. Regardless, I was only into my third day of a 10 day hunt when I spotted this guy at 500 yards. I had to hustle my extra wide butt to close the distance before he entered the bush. When I peeked around the corner of a big old pine tree there he was only 50 yards away along the treeline. The buck was stopped however, his butt was facing me. He had his neck cranked looking at me and the only shot was his neck. Well, you can see the exit wound shot in his neck. Killed him with my Cooper model 52 chambered for the 280 AI, 140 grain Nosler Accubonds.

Shot my first deer, a doe on the run doggin' a creek bed. Got a lot to learn about lead on a running deer. Missed 3 deer this year, the first 4 pt buck I shot at I was shaking so bad with buck fever I knew I blew it.

Got this one hit her in the hind leg and followed a 300 yard blood trail back to her. Hornady SST 2 3/4" did a great job on the impact.

Next year new gun Winchester 1300 with rifled barrel open sights.

I couldn't find the "Best tasting 2012 Whitetail - let's see yours" thread, so I guess I'll put this here. 58-minutes into opening day, if that gets me any extra "points"!

I read alot about the whole "first minute of season" or similar, an i think to myself... why?

its the first buck you'v seen of a potential 2week + season in some areas. much longer in others.

Each persons reasons must differ...time allowence maybe? buck tag when meats the trophy etc..
I would like to hunt around an around again until i was satisfied he was the the bigger Deer in the hubt area i had acces to.

Some cracker Deer in this thread, Thanks for Sharing!!!

Some bucks, bulls and rams are first day shooters. Its best to know what you want, and what your area can reasonably be expected to produce before you even start. Whitetail aren't exactly famous for hanging around while you make up your mind, and in the areas we hunt the chances of finding a specific buck again are slim and none.

I usually take 3 weeks to hunt whitetail where every year I could of harvested a buck (s) in the first minute of my hunt. I have a minimum score of 160 B&C before I pull the trigger, and if that buck cannot be found then I go home with the tag in my pocket...................many times two tags in my pocket, one from Alberta and the other from Saskatchewan. If I'm hunting trophy bucks I don't shoot sub-standard bucks just to fill my tag. Those bucks that I pass-up that score between 150 to 160 will only be bigger the following year, "if" mother nature is not to hard on them.

I have to agree with you. I don't set my standars as high as yours, but if by the end I don't see or shoot 140 +, I'll just shoot a doe. I don't get why these city hunters come out and shoot a spiker buck. This is why there are so few mature bucks in my area left. I don't always shoot the biggest buck, but if I needed meat that bad, I'm sure I could afford to buy something in its place. And not all bucks will be bigger then next year, 3 out of the 4 I got on my wall had gone down hill. Have sheds from them from years before. But I guess each to his own n your hunting standards.
