It works but then again so do other grips.
However, it only works if you mount it in the proper location.
I've seen lots of people with the AFG in a position that indicates that they only bought it because they love to hang extra crap all over their gun.

The difference between magpul afg and the pts version is a gimmick in my opinion.
I guess it depends on how hot the gun gets. Myself, I'd shell out a few more bucks for the genuine article.
I agree, but do you think the PTS version of the AFG is manufactured with a difference polymer than the main line? Do you think you could heat the rifle up enough for the AFG to melt? I doubt that is possible without damaging the rifle first. I managed to melt a set of stock handguards and I was still able to hold on to them.
Yes I do. I've handled quite a few PTS items and there is a difference in the polymer. Specifically what I couldn't say, but it is different. A lot of the PTS stuff is also thinner and subsequently lighter, so the tolerances and structural strength just isn't there.
With respect to the heat issue, yes. I was going through my Magpul spare parts bin and noticed a few rail panels that had partially melted and others that displayed noticeable signs of heat damage. These were from some older builds, so the round count would have been fairly low (I guess I just had a few of them in the right spot). While I wouldn't say this is indicative, it would seem to indicate there as at least the potential depending on the configuration.
PTS is fine for rimfire, but as I said I'd be really reluctant to use anything like a PTS version of an AFG, RVG or pistol grip on an actual AR (especially an SBR). Mainly because it's often used as a hand stop or support to prevent one from inadvertently sweeping the muzzle. While the likelihood of failure is probably low, if would really suck to have something happen when it could've been avoided for $2-3 more.
So you're saying the genuine Magpul covers also melt? I guess they're not a great option then. Neither the AFG or RVG are load bearing like a pistol grip and failure would result in your hand coming towards you not the muzzle so I don't buy the "sweeping yourself" argument. You have a point regarding price, there really isn't much difference. Even if its only peace of mind, I too would sooner run the real deal then their PTS line given the choice.
