Chamfering the 10/22 Bolt to help cure Failure-to-feed

Hello everyone, I'm not especially good with words so please bear with me ;)

Do you guys find that when you cycle bulk packs of 22lr, sometimes you get shots that seem to be underpowered, and are more prone to jamming? And when it does jam, it is usually because the rounds in the magazine aren't pushed up fast enough, mostly because it's dirty? But a simple "shake" would allow the next bullet to slowly slide up in a dirty magazine?

Comparatively, it seemed to me that when I cycle hotter rounds such as CCI Mini-mags and CCI Stingers, I pretty much have no problem, even with the same dirty magazine.

One connection that I was able to relate is that when you run hotter rounds(Mini-mags, Stingers), they tend to send the bolt flying back with great force, hitting the back of the receiver/cross pin with a very noticeable shock; while underpowered rounds do not hit the cross pin, and the action can jam anytime. (To be fair, the "hotter" rounds have NEAR zero incidents in the thousands I've shot, while with the bulk packs it would jam 1 in 50 rounds)

I am tempted to draw the conclusion that this bolt impact is actually helping to "shake" the next round free of grime/wax/carbon, and up to the top of the feed lips for the bolt to catch onto.

Does anyone agree that "shaking" the magazine by bolt clash under recoil is one of the most important mode of increasing reliability of the cycling process?

If so, do modifications that are aimed to reduce bolt force (i.e. chamfering the bolt) helps increase magazine reliability?

not sure about the chamfering , but for the rounds you find forcing the bolt back on the pin , have you considered a recoil buffer to replace that pin?

Yes I do have a buffer which I use from time to time. I don't really know what the improvement is other than reduce noise though..
 
I was thinking it is this bolt impact that shakes the rounds lose from grime and dirt when feeding.

I installed a recoil buffer last month and have had zero issues with feeding or ejecting of rounds .

anyways hope someone else has suggestions on your failure to feed problem , good luck
 
Why not just clean the mag?

It could also be that your particular rifle doesn't like that particular ammo and prefers the CCI.
I would suggest trying different types of bulk ammo as well as a good cleaning of action and mag!
 
yup sounds like you have a dirty mag with a weak spring. Theres a sticky here on how to disassemble and clean mags. Also cci ammo jams less because it is better quality than most bulk ammo. Thats why you pay more for it.
 
First, yes chamfering the bolt is an excellent and worthwhile mod. It helps with ejection especially with lighter loads. I do think it will help your issue quite a bit but you should clean your mags. You didn't mention what mags you use. The BX-10 rotary mags are easy to clean, hicap mags that don't disassemble need to be flushed with hot soapy water. Do the chamfering for easy smooth cycling and more reliable ejection, clean your mags to finish the job and make a far more reliable rifle.
 
I would look at the bulk ammo you are using and cleaning mags.
As for a bulk ammo, I'm found CCI Blazer 40gr bulk is working best for me.

First of all thanks for the suggestions!

If you read my first post throughouly, you may find that I was actually discussing about the relationship of violent recoil and magazine reliabilty via shock/shaking.

I was suggesting to increase recoil force, and hopefully even lower quality ammo can run fine with dirty magazines. If this is do-able, a few mods can potentially help defer the mag cleaning to a later time/higher round count, even when weaker bulk ammo are used.

I don't think the 22LR caliber and "violent recoil" really belong together in the same post. :D
What is happening when you use hotter loads like CCI Mini-Mags, is the extra pressure from blow back forces the bolt back farther allowing greater cycle time. When you have greater cycle time, you have more time for a complete extraction to happen before your next round loads.
When you have week loads from cheap ammo, the blow back pressure is less and does not allow the bolt to fully cycle or achieve full extraction of the spent shell before the bolt rebounds back causing "stovepipes".
I truly believe that magazine "shake" has absolutely nothing to do with it at all. :rolleyes:

a bad mag fit where it moves when it fired could be whats doing it

Possible... but OP is saying that hotter rounds "shake" his mag and cause more reliable shooting and less jamming.
You would think that a shaking/loose fitting mag would actually cause more FTL's and jammimg wouldn't you??

yep although there are a few guns that will work well with the mag moving alot but they are centerfire and prohibited here lol from what ive seen the 10/22 likes a good fitting mag
 
Oh I meant shaking the round lose and up, from grime and dirt, not the mag! Lol, I use quality 25 rounders.
