In Search of a Training Rifle - Close to an AR

As the title suggests, I'm looking for a rifle that has controls "similar" to an AR to use as a training rifle. Criteria:

1. - Non-Restricted

2. - .22LR

3. - Non-restricted, lol

The closest thing I can find that is NR that may suit my needs for use as a training rifle in place of an AR for this years coming 3 gun matches is the ISSC SCAR. It's NR, .22LR, but I can't seem to find too many articles on it's long term reliability and durability. Any input would be great. The reason why the ISSC is the best choice so far is the fact that the safety is close to the same place and mag release is very similar also. I'll be doing FTF, FTE and mag drills with it mostly. Accuracy I don't care about, just a cost saving tool and something that allows me to do this in the back 40 instead of a range.

If there are other suggestions I'd love to know. The Rem, M&P and Colt are out though as they are restricted AR variants. I have plenty of 10/22's and again, no where near similar enough on the controls or mag shape.

A 10/22 or remington 597 with a Archangel stock would greatly represent a AR platform, or you can buy a Ruger SR22, witch is a ruger action into an AR style stock, witch is very well made and durable. But, youll bet it, more expensive...

Kel Tec SU22. Mags aren't silly sleeves,it actually uses the AR .22 conversion mags. Only had mine a couple of weeks, but I've got a box of cheapo 525 through it with no issues. Non restricted, light light light.

Gets you the mag changes, but the charging handle is the same as the 10/22, on the right side of the rifle.

Neither of those is even remotely close, sorry guys.

No, a 10/22 doesn't even come close to how an AR drops a mag, reloads or charges. 10/22 is not an option. I have a few of them in different forms and it's not what I'm looking for. SR22 is not even remotely operated like an AR.

Yep, still lost in the Ruger right side charging handle... Close, but not quite. :( I really wish I had an AR-180B with a 22LR conversion kit...
 
If you want a true AR training 22LR rifle there are only two choices. Both are restricted. A dedicated upper, or the M&P. I'm looking at the M&P. The SR22 is a bad idea. It's a neat firearm but you start shooting it and do think it's an AR. The controls of course are all wrong though which pissed me off since I'd go to use AR controls as you do think it's an AR.

I have a dedicated upper and frankly it was a waste of money. It's stopped working on me. Lots of jams and a few out of battery incidents, plus wrecking my black dog mags. Now it just doesn't shoot. I think the firing pin is jammed or something. By all reports the M&P is the best option. I'm considering one for shooting at the indoor range.

It HAS to be non-restricted... I can go and shoot a Colt .22LR AR all day long at a range, but it's crowded, confined and doesn't allow me to properly run my drills like I would be doing in 3 gun. How do you answer the RO at TSE when he asks you why you're in Urban Prone in a pistol bay with 6 mags on the ground? LOL!!!

I think the SCAR is really still it... Airsoft is also an option and I don't care WHAT this forum thinks. I use a GBB pistol for practice fire and it's the SAME as live fire only safe to do in your basement.
 
The SCAR clone has had questionable reliability. Plus the barrel is sleeved.

The one I really wanted was the Sig 522. But due to a BS classification it's prohibited.
 
Airsoft blows. I also hate looking for reviews on real rifles only to get a bunch of airsoft crap.
