Hi guys,

I've been looking around for a while now, for a high magnification, large scope especially for .308 load development. I don't want to spend a huge pile of cash, but I don't wanna buy junk either. I believe A guy doesn't have to buy the top name stuff for top price to get something good. What come s to mind, and what i've picked up recently is the Mueller APV and Eradicator. They are excellent scopes for their price IMO, and one is on my 10/22, and the other on my .17 BSEV. So with that in mind, what do you guys think of the Millett LRS-1? I've seen one at WholeSale sports in Winnipeg, and was able to handle it, but there's only so much you get out of looking at something like that in the store. What do you think of the quality at full zoom? And does it track well, shift zero throughout the zoom range? Basically I wanna use it for building the best load i can for my Savage Model 12 BVSS, and once I have the load down pat for the long ranges I wanna shoot at (500+ Meters), then i'll put the Leatherwood M-1000 ARTII back on it, and get it set up for the ranging.

SO, what's your opinions? are there any other cheaper options that may work for me? IE: Sightmark, Counter Sniper 10-40x56, CCOP 6-24x56, CCOP 8-32x56?

Or the Millett TRS 4-16x50?

further more, anyone out there have a high mag variable power scope that they may wanna part with, that would suit my needs? LMK, and thanks for all your input. I had a chance at one (LRS-1) that was listed yesterday morning the EE, and was the first to respond for sure, as I responded id take it one minute after it was posted, but the buyer reneged on it.... :-( At this time I only have around 300.00 to spend, but have some items i could trade along with cash, maybe.

First off I have one on my Savage 10 FCP-SR and I do love the scope. First off I liked how bright it was. It was also nice and clear. At the very highest of magnifications there is a tiny amount of fogging. For me it's hard to notice unless you look through a $1000+ scope and comparing.

Millett is owned by Bushnell if that means anything.

Some people joke about the sunshade but personally I like them, especially when dealing with shooting into the sun. The parallax adjustment if very nice to use and accurate for the yardage indicated.

My biggest complaint and something I should have researched more was scope rings. The scope tube being 35mm means ring choices are limited. So far it seems only two companies make 35mm rings, Millet and Vortex. Vortex rings will run about $300 a pair after shipping and taxes. Millet will be about half of that. Why do you need new rings? Because the rings that come with the rifle will lift your scope 1" above the barrel.

well, Ive been banging the idea around for a while now, I have most of the winter to decide on what i'll get, im 80% for the millett, new at Wholesale sports. But i'll keep my eye open on the EE and see what pop's up. A NF is in the cards as well. It all depends on the economics come spring. Another thing i kinda promised myself was an H&K SL-8.

I also have a LRS. Great scope for the money. The first one I had, had a small issue with the illuminated reticle. Warranty is done through bushnell and they were great to deal with. Sent the scope to them and they sent me a new one.

I wanted the illuminated reticle but settled for the plain

No experience with the higher mag Millets but my 1x4 is a POS. I think Millet is junk and would just save and get something better.

Thats nice in theory.

But one question is, where can I find a 6-24 powered scope with target turrets and a mildot for $400-500?

well guys, i bought the LRS-1, and ill say, I really like it! I have it mounted on my Savage model 12, and while the scope rings are really tall, they may just work out for me.... although i'll buy a set of 35mm low ones for sure. I really like the quality of the glass, and the turrets, it seems very well made, but it a very big scope! It fits the model 12 with 26" barrel and boyd's thumbhole well though. All i need to do is get it out to the range and get 'er sighted in, I may be able to do that today, if the wind is decent. I plan on sighting it in at 250 yards..... heres a couple pics. One thing is for sure, this isn't a rig you'd want to lug around in the bush....;-)

Ive had mine for a couple years now, its gotten wet, seen elevation changes and been up next to a S&B of same magnification on a PGW lapua.

The S&B is a better scope and the difference in parallax is incredible, but the difference in clarity isn't a $3100 difference in my opinion.

The LRS is a good entry level target shooter, it is heavy and bulky for packing in the bush though.

I got vortex rings for around $170 out of red deer, name of the place escapes me at the moment.

I Took it out today to sight it in, it was 0 degree's, and the wind was only 10 kph from the west, so it was a perfect day! i had it on paper at 100y first shot as i laser bore sighted it. I needed to move 7" to the left and 4" down, and my second shot was dead center. Overall I am very happy with it. Compared to my Viper Vortex PST, It's not quite as clear, at the higher magnifications, and I really like the reticle. For the price, its an awesome scope IMO. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a long range (bench) scope. There's no way i'd want to lug the Savage model 12 around in the bush. Heck, without an optic, its heavy. With the LRS-1, it's a tank. But for those long range coyote shots, i'tll be the answer ;-) Overall I'm very impressed. Now, all i need to do is get a pair of 35mm low rings, and i'll be set! I have a day off tomorrow, so if the wind is manageable, I have 100+ rounds of hand loads I can play with. Oh, I am going to order the Millett 35mm low rings from Frontier Firearms, they have them for 89.00 shipped....

Elevation changes in Calgary? Up and down the mountain from sea level on the coast in the slush was a disaster for mine, glass was mediocre,
Maybe mine was a Lemon,it had seen close to 600 rounds 308 though, actually bought used out of Calgary.
just my experience,
Lost me as a customer , hope you have better luck than mine
Cheers

I sold my LRS-1 because I just wasn't impressed with the build quality and the turrets were weird, they were accurate for click value but their friction lock for zeroing the turrets would slip and I ended up putting some kleenex under them to add some friction so they would lock solid. My TRS 4-16x50 is back in the box waiting to go back for service because the lenses are all messed up from something floating around inside scratching the coatings or something. It's only ever been on a 223 and a 308 so I'm gonna say it's pretty low quality as well.
I would have saved a little more and bought a Bushnell Elite 6500. I have the 2.5-16x44 and it's a way better scope than either of the Milletts.
Millett rings suck as well, just a cheaper copy of the Burris XTR. Be carefull because they strip easy.

Good luck, hope you have better luck than me.
