NEF Handy Rifle?

I own one, haven't taken it out yet. Every time I get all set up to take it out the rifle range is closed for black badge.

Ive got a h&r survivor in 308, im assuming theyre built the same a the handi rifle, maybe someone can correct me on this.

I bought it two deer and one moose season ago and have yet to take it to the woods due to chamber/transfer bar issues.

Last i heard (yesterday) was that a new rifle was being sent up to me from the states.

After all this crap i still have a fondness for it. I hear they shoot straight when they work.

nope, didn't dryfire; i fully depressed the trigger.....have heard all those reasons for not working before.

after the second trip back to Gravels (warranty work), they said the chamber is damaged.

as i dug deeper into this issue, i found out this isn't an isolated experience.

these are nice rifles though, and if the issues can be fixed it'll be in my collection for years.

The Handi rifle is a very nicely balanced and wonderfully simple gun. I have MANY of them... they are decent shooters and can be made to be very good shooters with a few little tweaks. If you want to learn about Handi's, head over to Graybeard's and read the Centerfire FAQ's, it is the best resource out there, those boys are Handi crazy! (http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php/board,126.0.html) The .223's are accurate and all new ones are 1:9 barrels and handle the heavier bullets... I have four .223's; two in Rem and two in Rem AI... the most accurate bullet out of mine are the Hornady 68 grain BTHP's... but the bulk (goofy) 55 grain Z-Max shoot really well also... an above poster said they are accurate inside of 100m, both my .223 AI's are MOA at 300m... and the regular .223's are not far behind! My 7mm-08 is even more accurate with 120 NBT's... and both the .30/30's and Hornets are inside MOA at 100m. I also have Handi's in K-Hornet, .243, 7mm-08, .30/30 AI, .308, 7.62X39, .44 Mag and .45/70... here are a few pics;

I just picked one up in 243 super light.
Rare in Canada it seems I looked for 3 years b4 one popped up on the EE.
Going to try 100gr Hornady FB when spring gets here.RB

I have a .223 Superlight and like it very much. (I also got lucky and found a used barrel in .308Winchester that matched up o.k. for headspace.) It shoots well, and for the money, very well. Not everyone likes them, and of course complaints are usually voiced louder than praise, but if you buy one you'll probably like it.

The Handi .243's are notorious for having trouble with 100's (lots of speculation as to why)... the heaviest that I have been happy with is the 90 NBT, the 75 & 87 V-Max are very good (varmints) and the 58 V-Max molys are "lights-out! I hunt deer sized game with the 85 Interbond... very, very accurate.

Great guns IMHO.
Kind of hit or miss on fit and finish though and it sounds like the company has changed hands quite a few times over the years which may be part of the problems with pre-Marlington H&R rifles being reported as the better buys. So if you can inspect your new rifle closely.

I have several. :D

Yes avoid dry firing them, says as much in the manual... Buggers up the firing pins.

Greybeards board has tons of info, tips and tricks on them.

IIRC around 2007 they switched from ejectors to to extractors.
Also if you get a new in the box one be ready to laugh at the fugly marlin trigger lock that comes with it, lol.

Question for all the NEF fans. Is there a reason the rear stock is always so proud of the action? I thought it was just a few rough ones I have seen, but since then have noticed it on all the NEF's including the custom stocked versions. Could a guy not reshape the rear stock to fit flush with the back of the action? Or is it designed that way for a reason?

Good question and I have no answer other then perhaps it is a strength improving thing.

But regarding wood stocks I have noticed my new 30/30 has a more beefy unfinished looking wood stock in comparison to my earlier made .243, or 45/70, so I'd be curious to know how this is handled with the plastic stocks.
