as i said before with bayo is $475 less missing 30rds mag ($30) = $445 .

i had a collection of 4-5 SKS-D a few years ago , i sold them all due to downsizing . :(

the above two was the last to go.
 
The AK mags that hold the bolt open are Yugoslavian M64 magazines, not Hungarian. They are the only country to develop this style of magazine and it is worth noting it does not keep the bolt locked back when you eject the mag, as it is actually the follower that's doing the work. In theory you could remove the follower and add it to any AK magazine and get the same function but that would be a bastard mag.

They are very desirable magazines but didn't necessarily command a premium price down south (before the latest "happenings" that is). Up here you could probably expect a modest premium on them. Excellent mags. I'd be quite happy to have some in my collection.

Thanks that's good to know. I had Hungarian in my head but my memory ain't 100% reliable. Yup I noted the fact that the bolt slams shut due to the lack of an actual hold-open. Debateable whether that actually saves time in a match or not, since I have to rack it again anyway. And as Curtton pointed out, it probably isn't great for the follower. Those mags are a nice blued steel, quite a world apart from the Chinese mags.

looks like a keeper and i paid the right amount so i feel was a good purchase. very good info on the mags but for 5/30 mag that looks like it might get in the way i am not going to be hunting for one anytime soon.
 
If you can find some, the Hungarian 20-round "tanker" mags are a good match to the SKS-D and have a nearly identical profile to the 20-round Tapco duckbill mags.

I absolutely agree, when I used to carry an SKS in the bush I carried the fixed & flush mag and some stripper clips...and that's why my D-box isn't all beat to h###. :) All depends and where ya are and what you're doin'. YMMV

I paid $500 for mine with two 5 rnd mags and 1 5/30 Helluva deal I thought at the time. No one was selling them and I looked for months...then...after I bought mine 4 more came up a little cheaper but Im not regretful for the purchase for sure. Nice rifle you have there
 
i guess i should have held out on the one i sold in 2012. my experience was that over $400 guys would say they would take it, then disappear.
 
Like I said, they've become obsolescent with the advent of modern popular accessories. Back in the day the SKS was more of a niche item, a curiosity, a relic that no one considered much more than a big bore plinker. Now folks use them for three gun, hunting, defense, action shoots, milsurp shoots. Its popularity has skyrocketed thanks to new supply and availability of cheap ammo, and accessories to bring it into the modern age that make it competitive with other designs.

Why bother spending $400-500 on a used SKS-D that takes hard to find and expensive AK mags (Marstar for example has them at a whopping $75/piece) when that same money will get you a beautiful Tula refurb, four Tapco 20-rounders that DO hold the bolt open and charge with strippers, and a full case of ammo?

people fail to realize the fact they are not importing anymore so the prices are dictated by supply/demand and trying to talk down is futile.

the prices i quoted are for excellent conditions "D" and thats what they been going for the past year . now, before the downturn in the economy in the summer of 2008 , i saw two "D" sold as high as "$600 each.

15-20 years ago, "D" only fetched a 25% premium over a standard SKS , when SKS was selling at $100 , you could have gotten a "D" for $125 , now , its 2-3 X higher so are the "D" overpriced or the standard underpriced ?

i think the SKS is underpriced , you can get a standard SKS for $150 then the price only went up 50% in all those years while most stuffs have more than doubled.

Exactly, when I bought mine (some time in the 90s) there either weren't any such things as Tapcos, or they were simply unheard of - at that time I tried finding such a kit for my fixed mags and was told there were no such thing - but of course they could bring in the D-Box model, at the premium price. I had never heard of the internet back then, only Gun Digests, gun magazines and of course the WSS catalog. Seems to me there were ads for detachable kits, but the press on them was bad.
