Ruger GP100 6" Alternative?

Don't kid yourself easyrider that is an old wives tale The S&W guns are every bit as strong as a Ruger and not only that they are much nicer to shoot and handle. The only drawback is they cost a lot more but I guess you get what you pay for.

That must be why there are "Ruger Only Loads" Much the same that You can't use 45/70 Marlin or Ruger #1 loads in a Trapdoor rifle.

Smith may be smoother and more refined, but it isn't as strong.

Ruger only loads are actually meant for the Ruger single action revolvers or the T/C Contender, not for GP100 - says so in my reloading books. The SA Ruger are very strong compared to the swing out cylinder designs. Between myself and my dad, we have several 357's including a S&W 686, S&W 66, Colt Python, and a Ruger New Model Blackhawk. My two favourites to shoot are the 4.2" 686, and the 6.5" blackhawk.

I used to have a GP100 but sold it for the 686. I must admit that I haven't fired the 6" python yet however since we just got it.

There are Super Redhawk only loads as well for 44mag, 45 colt, and 357mag (e.g. Hornaday 0.429" 300gn XTP's have a ruger only crimp line). You may be right about the GP-100 not having special loads but it will digest all full power 357 loads for its lifetime. Ruger over builds its revolvers, if you doubt it do a google search, its pretty commonly known.

Brian Pearce wrote an article in Handloader Magazine on +P loads for the .44 Mag that were intended ONLY for the Redhawk and the Super RH

You can find the article in the No 265 issue, April 2010. If you do go looking for it, remember that the loads are only for Redhawks and the Super Redhawks. Even if any of the loads are short enough to fit in a Blackhawk, the Blackhawk cylinder is not as strong as the one on the Redhawk.
