416 Ruger Alaskan?

What? You scared or something? ;)

lol, my little 6.5 pound 350RM pushing a 250 @2500-2600 is not too fun from the bench... I call it snotty ;)
Not sure what I would call a 350 @ 2400+ in the same weight rifle from the bench until I tried it :0

Somewhere around 65 lbs of recoil...I'm guessing that from the bench it would be something north of "snotty". "Obstinate" perhaps. Or maybe "Obstreperous", depending on the stock design and recoil pad.

BUM - you could just wear one of these to absorb the recoil...

I own a 416 ruger Alaskan and love it. It shoots MOA with 400 gr tsx at 2375fps out to 350yrds. I painted the gun arma-coat olive green, put warne quick detach rings and a Trijicon 1-4 scope with red triangle post reticle. My biggest complaint with the gun is the brass, I am on the edge of pushing the cartridge too fast for the brass. 1 more grain of powder and I go from getting 6-7 reloads to getting 2-3 before the primer pockets open up too much. I actually like the hogue stock and have been told by ruger at SCI that it helps manage the recoil to a point I enjoy shooting this rifle. I'm not a big guy and I put 17 rounds through it in 15 mins at the cinema range last week. And yes for those wondering, I have shot bigger as well. Many rounds of .458 Lott in my buddies #1. I will be stocking up on brass for this gun however, Rugers new line sucks and their marketing of this great cartridge has been horrible. I doubt also that it will survive, but I'll enjoy mine till I can't shoot it anymore.

Just a note for what its worth Re '416 Ruger Alaskan' Following is a pm I previously sent to AG during his search for one of these rifles. Passed along to save anyone else the hassle. IMHO..Ruger is now run by Accountants, and the brand has become a POS far greater than what everyone is accusing Remington of as of late.

A few years back, a buddy and I each bought one of these when they first came out, through Clay at Prophet river.
We bought the only factory ammo (Hornady) made for the rifle. We each went to our respective ranges to sight in.
We both found that the rifles would not FEED the ammo from the loaded magazine. They would jam, each and every time you cycled the bolt! GReat for a gun billed as a 'Dangerous Game Rifle'

It gets better! We contacted Clay and were directed to Rugers warranty facility..(a Camera shop back east somewhere) They in turn returned the guns to the US to Ruger..(months go by..hunting season came and went. Eventually, we each received a 'New & Different' Rifle, with the explanation from the warranty facility that Ruger had opted to replace the rifles for our expediency..No explanation was given as to the source of the original problem, and many months was hardly expedient.

Soo, again, off to the range with the new guns. Same F**^ing . Neither Rifle would chamber rounds from the mag., Repeat all of the above..Throw in a personal discussion of this matter, face to face, between me and a VP from Ruger at the Shot show, who (in a crowd) assurred me he would look into it personally! never heard from that clown again! Both my buddy and I had many conversations with the Ruger Service department, demanding that they actually load and testfire any rifle they returned to us before doing so (which you think they would have done in the first instance) We finally got a blow by blow description as to how the rifles were 'rebuilt' by hand, feed rails changed , feed ramp modified, mag follower changed..etc.

It was just over 2 years from date of purchase before we got our hands on guns that would function. I promptly sold mine in disgust, which is why I don't have one now. While going through this ordeal, we noted similar posts on the internet from others.

Ruger never admitted that there was a serious design flaw in these rifles. Many of the original batch are floating around and are likely the cause of any up for sale. Ruger went so far as to try to blame it on the Hornady ammo (which really impressed Hornady when we told them about it) I do know that shortly after these rifles came out there were lots showing up for sale on the used market. I suspect others just unloaded them rather than go through the run around we did.

FYI and caution if you buy one of these things!

cheers

I can echo what 585nyati said about Ruger warranty. I had a .358Win Frontier that had a hole from the front rib tapped just a little too deep and protruded into the barrel, yes a hole drilled in the barrel. Dealt with their warranty centre in QC and Ruger Service, it was a slooooooow process and I eventually got a replacement 1 year later, yes 12 months to the day almost and only with constant prodding and reminders from my end. Kind of pathetic service in my opinion.

I had problems every so often with the first box of the 400gr. Hornady dgx ammo. As soon as I used the once fired brass and reloaded with Barnes 400gr. Bullets I have had no problems. I attribute the issue to the flat nose of the hornady bullet jamming into the feed ramp. Go to a pointier bullet and your problems are solved, I fired 17 rounds in 15 minutes the other day firing a full mag till empty every time till the last two rounds and had one of my reloads jam, but it was my OAL. I have since changed and have no problems.

Doesn't make up for the initial design flaw though I agree. I will never get rid of mine, I love it.
