S&W 629 4.2'' .44magnum

Got a chance to shoot her today. Was great fun! Recoil is essentially the same as my 5'' (as expected)

Just factory AE 240JHP's and Rem 180 SP's today as I haven't reloaded 44 for a while. Quite the muzzle flash from the 180's!

Grips are lacking, in fact, they actually they caused a pretty nasty pea sized abrasion to my strong hand thumb. I don't have ''office worker'' hands either.

Gonna source some grips and prob send one of these up to Murdoc for Nitron treatment.

So you bought two of the 4.2 inch 629s? And what is Nitron, like blueing?

Smith isn't making these 4.2" guns for us. They are for the California market (and maybe a couple of others- not sure on that though). We just benefit from it.

Auggie D.

Just got mine an hour ago. Already changed the :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug:ty smith grips to some rubber hogue ones. I do have some nice woods coming but not here yet.

My first impression was WOW! The gun felt way smaller then i figured. It felt like a .357 mag. I have owned the 5inch model with full underlug and it felt a lot bigger. This gun feels awesome. A little bulldog. Cant wait to shoot it. Pics do not do it justice.

Ill do a video when i get to the range.

I think the Model 29's are a little nicer, but are also more expensive... was thinking about the 29 in Nickel at Wanstalls, but that's a little too steep for me.

if your talking old model 29s then yes. Id love to get my hands on a mint Nickel or blued 29-2.

Those Houge's look good.

They look good, but these look the same and feel a hell of a lot better when shooting (note the exposed vs covered/padded backstrap - it's like soft gel in there which helps eliminate sorehand. Necessary when shooting these 310gr Garrett's):

On my 629 Classic. I took them off and am putting them on my 4.2" 629 if it ever gets here:

Got a question for the guys loading for the 44's...
I was initially planning to use either Berry or Frontier plated bullets for plinking when mine gets here. I've been loading auto cartridges for years but this will be my first foray into hot or heavy recoiling revolvers. I bought this gun for plinking to make big recoil, big noise, big fireballs and big smiles. My plan is to run a 240 grain @ ~1400fps. I want to run full power loads in this gun, not looking to tame it down ;)
Looking at using H110, 2400, or AA9 to do it. My specific question is, I read someplace and can't remember where that pushing bullets like those over ~1200 fps isn't recommended because there's no cannelure or crimp groove in those bullets and you may get setback or movement under recoil.
I am familiar with using lead but prefer not to. With all that said, I am initially going to load winchester bulk 240's but they are quite pricey, double the cost of Berry or Frontier's. Any of you revolver savvy guys have any advice or recomendations?

a steady diet of any heavy heavy loads will wear out any gun. I would use the berrys for your moderate to (light-heavy) loads and spend the money on really good jacketed bullets like sierras or hornady etc for the fun wrist breaking loads when your friends shoot your new gun

Well i got speedloaders ordered on the way, and I have some nice hogue rubber and wood grips on the way. Next is a nice leather holster.

I just tried placing an order with Houge and they wanted $25 shipping! Went over to brownells and got same grips cheaper and shipping was $5.

It'll be nice to get rid of these silly S&W grips.

Nice and warm inside. Lol. Yep shot her a bit as I posted. Grips really do bite.... literally. Still have the abrasion on my thumb to prove it.
