My rifle shoots 1/2" groups @100 yards all day! Really? Prove it.

Hey guys, I finally made it out to the range today.

I didn't make the 1/2 MOA challenge tho, but I thought I'd post my attempt anyway.

My set-up is...

Savage Model 12 F/TR (all factory still) chambered in .223 1in7 twist
Minox ZA 5 6-30X56
Mystic M-Pod used with a rear bag

80gr AMax
25.3gr Varget
Lapua Brass
CCI BR4s

smallest group is .407
largest group is .651

average is .526

conditions were not bad considering it is winter, I shot a few foulers and a couple practice groups first that were terrible and then I only had 25 rounds left I set up my target and this is what I got, I didn't have ammo for do overs.

It is what it is but I will be trying again, for a factory rifle I guess I shouldn't complain but I know the rifle can do it, its mostly pilot error I think...

Originally when I started this thread I was hoping that only the people who successfully completed the challenge would post their results. But it didn't take long to see that it would be a pretty boring thread if that was the case. Its great to see everyones attempts whether they were successful or not. I also appreciate all the positive feedback from everyone. Have fun and be safe. Rod

You have everthing to make the 1/2" chalange. I have seen a fellow shoot a 5 shot group at 400m that measured 1.240
With the same rifle, brass, primers and powder but not Hornady's he used Bergers 80 vld
#1 get rid of the 80 Amaxs they are not a match bullet and far from it.to many flyers
#2 back off your load of 25.3 start at 24.5 and go up by .1 grains
#3 get your self some 80gr,80.2 82gr Bergers the 90gr Berger Match work also.80gr Sierras & JLK will work well also.
Try and get a day where wind is nil and you just might shoot the smallest groups.

Had frost forming from my breath but no problems with the action or folder etc. Will need to develop a load too for the new rifle. Now have 47 rounds down the pipe in total including getting it sighted in:D Things are only going to get better with this one!

thanks for the advice, I was thinking about trying the Berger 80gr VLDs I found a place that sells em for $27.95 a box but I don't have the funds to order any yet. Wholesale sports here usually has em but they are $39.99 greedy bastards!

when I switch to the bergers Ill work up a new load

Sorry! Did not have time to sort out/create a load yet and I need my shooting partner back so he can bring the firewood;-) Don't have any spare FGMM 175's do you? I was shooting low .2's (3rds) with the 9rds I had left to sight it in with. I been around these darn PGW's long enough to know it will do way better:D

That is one of the big advantages of the stock used by PGW over some of their competition IMO. For example, the folder on an AI folds bolt opposite leaving a much larger hunk of steel right in front of your face. I had issues with frost build up, but more importantly, it reflecting breath back into my face fogging goggles.

I don't think we have any 175s around....You sure you want your shooting partner back? We all know what he can be like... ;-)

I know! He did teach me how to pick a nice rifle though. Now I just need to learn how to shoot in the cold, will do better next time :D

Agreed. I got to play with a AIAX 50cal at Wolverine (Thanks to the crew in Virden!) and its a nice system. I just like mine better! Miles ahead of the folder on my XLR evolution chassis as well. I just need to get a few more down range (and try beat Toolmans .411 average)

Ugh... I just bought 600 of them... (about 530 left now). I've shot about 400 so far and have had "decent" results. I guess you could say good when I've had a few groupings under 1/2 but I've been chasing issues and going about things the wrong way. I should have bedding it and built it fully before load development. I haven't had a constant till last weekend.

Curious how others feel about AMAX's? Is it universal for calibers too? I might have to switch to Sierra or Berger.

this is about where i'm at too, been using the V-Max bullet for a while and really liked them, but my groups don't stay as tight as I know they could/should.
 
I can't speak about the Amax bullets, once you get awesome results from match bullets in the first few test rounds you load for a rifle why would you bother loading anything but true match bullets??

All of these claims of rifles that shoot under MOA all day with winchester white box ammo get put to bed pretty quick....but hey if anyone wants to prove me wrong on this please post pictures of your target....pass or fail....as all I have ever been able to do was hit the target all day...and I likely would have had a better group with double odd buck in a 12 gauge........some guys really think they can fool the wise........but I will leave myself open to being proven wrong...but we need some substancial proof of these claims.

Accuracy comes at a price.....budget components will get you budget results, this has been proven for years and years now, most of us know better, but if anyone wants to wear out their barrel trying to show us otherwise then have at it, but for all of the rifles that I have had and shot over the years I have never seen or witnessed it......but I certainly read alot about it on the internet.........and for what its worth I send well over500 rounds of centerfire ammo down range a month......so if someone knows the best cheap alternative I am all ears..........

Any guestaments on gained accuracy going from AMAX to Berger or Sierra Matchkings? The cost difference isn't THAT much, but the AMAX i think is somewhat "called" a match round. Now if it is is another issue.

I appear to be getting decent results, but I've never tried another option yet.


Anybody going out shooting this weekend? I hope to get out and might try to string together some groupings to see what I can do.
 
Your rifle will tell you what it likes best...but in general...Bergers shoot better". I hope to get out this weekend, but my GPS says I'm still 2300Kms from the Range:)
