Body Armour Sales to Civilians: Update 21 Mar & Post 105

Update Mar 21st 2013. The info below is still the case. We have spoke to them and they have researched the topic. Lvl 3 and Lvl 4 are controlled goods and not available to civilians not regististered with controlled goods. All other classes of body armour are controlled by provincial legislation should it exist.


After spending a good chunk of today on the phone with Controlled Goods, ECL, and the Controlled Goods inspector etc we were given a clearer view of this.

Level I, 2, 2A and 3A are not controlled goods and are not regulated except by provincial body armour acts.

"The following interpretations explain
and amplify the terms used in this category
and throughout this subchapter: (1) The body
armor covered by this category does not include
Type 1, Type 2, Type 2a, or Type 3a as
defined by the National Institute of Justice
Classification;"

As such NIJ Lvl 3 and Lvl 4 is a controlled good and not available to sell to individuals not registered with controlled goods. We're currently seeking clarification if expired Lvl 3 and Lvl 4 are controlled as they would no longer meet the NIJ standards after 5 years.

To what you originally posted, Lvl 3 and 4 plates are stilled controlled. The only thing that they ended up being incorrect on was Lvl 1, 2, 2A and 3A...basically most soft armour.

Anything passed it's "due date" isn't suitable as "protection" for any government agency, thus, by my logic, is only a novelty item. Either that, or we are being mugged as tax payers, to replace them on such a regular basis, and I can't see how, in such difficult times, financially, that could be possible.

How's that for an answer?

I think a simple solution to alot of issue is we just ban the UN from Canada and the US, as they serve no purpose. All they want is to put ridiculous restrictions on us to prevent us from protecting and defending ourselves. Let them first ban Sharia law in the middle east and enforce the ban. Once that is done they perhaps might get some credibility with me. You know that will never happen though.

Looks like a lot of panic buying for Frontier was caused by this with their level IV Surplis Irish vests. There was almost 2 full pages yesterday, now their down to one.

I'm half tempted to get a 3rd set myself not knowing if the expired IV vests are kosher or not.

Kind of sucks though - I could never bring myself to spend $500+ for a new, legit set of rifle plates - I suppose the choice has been made for me.

SFRC, does this mean you will continue to stock and sell surplus level II vests? I noticed you took down the link on your site to the soft vests - you had it up just a few days ago.

Perhaps my tinfoil hat is on too tight, but the UN does not believe people have the right to self-defence and using body armour is a form of self defence. Now the people that are directly behind banning the sale of Level 3 & Level 4 body armour to the public is our government and law enforcement. They may be afraid of criminals getting their hands on it but it is also keeps it out of the hands of law abiding citizens for no good reason.
Banning it from sale to the law abiding citizen will still not stop it from getting into the hands of criminals as they don't care about the rules.

The sharia law thing was out there I admit, but I was on a rant and it just came out.

One interesting observation I think this body armour debacle has really highlighted though.

When C68 was implemented, large swaths (I dare say, close to the majority) of gun owners folded like a cheap suit, turned their guns in or just gave up on the hobby altogether.

Conversely, now with a new, non-Baby Boomer generation of shooters - the second there's a wiff of either shortages or of the government coming for our guns (or other property) including through insidious regulations (i.e. - Ontario ATT rewrite, US panic buying, new body armour regulations, etc.) I think the younger generation of gun owners come out of the woodwork to buy them and to hold them with an iron fist.

I don't think many Boomers who once had guns would be the Molon Labe, "Cold Dead hands" types - but to businesses like SFRC, I hope it's encouraging to you to know that there is a market out of supportive buyers and your efforts in trying to run a business in such a government hostile environment are sincerely appreciated.

If you get any new stock of surplus soft level II vests, you can expect an order and huge amounts of referrals from me, that's for sure.
