This winter I started using a 22lr with a 11.5" barrel while hunting coyotes. I've kept all my shots within 80 or so yards and I haven't lost a coyote yet. In fact, most of them have died suprisingly quickly. I even made the last two summersault while shot broadside running. I'm switching back and forth between cci stingers and win bulk 40gr hp's and I haven't noticed much of a difference. I just wanted to share my findings. I'm not advocating 22lr for coyotes but I will be continuing to use it. My father in law has a deer farm and the coyotes have been very hard on his herd this year so I've been doing all my hunting around there. I can't use centerfires around here and I've shot quite a few in years past with a 17hmr with far less than satisfactory results. I don't have a 22mag so that left the lowly 22 lr or shotgun and I'm not a big fan of shotgunning coyotes. I used to feel that the 22 was inadequate for anything larger than jackrabbits and that trying to shoot coyotes would be inhumane but after 10-12 clean, quick kills I'm getting more confidence in it all the time.

Heck my dad and uncles used to buy a new truck every 2nd year off of coyotes that they shot with .22's & a Marlin goose gun (12 ga 3" magnum)with BB shot. The bigger guns blow big holes in them and it's costly and / or a PITA to stitch the holes up.
.22 is way deadlier than folk's realize.

I keep having arguments with a fellow gun owner about the effectiveness of 22LR. I'm pretty tired of hearing "it's barely even deadly". What does that even mean??? Cripes.

Those stingers are something wicked eh? At least your using them with a conscience and not expecting them to do more than what they are capable of. Keep gunning them down!

Have you seen the study a guy did with a frozen turkey in a jacket at 300 yards it still went right through it

How much is the going pelt rate I can ge 100 or so for a roughly skinned and patched up the bullet holes. What's everyone else getting

There's something about the coyote's resilience that amazes me. I nailed one with my .308 Win using 150 grain softpoint at 70 yards. The round entered at the front shoulder and ran diagonally back and across. He bolted for 50 yards, leaving the better part of his lungs and entrails hanging out. I'm not sure I'd make it as far if hit like that... Years ago, I picked one off at 25 yards with a 22 long rifle right behind the front shoulder. This one dropped and flopped around but went nowhere. Go figure!

I read this with interest a while back.

The fact is that a .22 lr is actually quite lethal on targets much larger than jackrabbits out past 300 yards; it's just that, as hunters, we generally prefer things to go ahead and die right there on the spot, which the .22 is not real good at when game tends to get much bigger. You can't argue with success though, if it is working for you then that's great.

If you haven't tried them the 17hmr with the speer TNT hollow points. A whole new appreciation of rimfire effectivness on coyotes out to 125-150 yds. and very little sewing ( 1 .177 hole)

Sorry guys, but shooting coyotes with a .22RF is just not a good idea. I don't care how you try to rationalize it, or how many times you have seen it work; deliberately going out coyote hunting with a .22RF is just not a good idea. Some coyote will suffer badly, sooner or later.

Here's some food for thought.

I just stumbled on this video tonight:

I have to admit, I am impressed with the penetration and expansion of the various cartiges tested and I am rethinking using Velocitors on anything but paper from now on. However, bear in mind, this test does not account for hyde or bone. They may have a very different effect on the tissue if they tumble.

I have also seen the turkey test which does BTW.

I rolled one (coyote) last summer hunting gophers with my 10-22 at about 120 yards, he was facing straight away from me and i gave him just enough lift over him he took that blazer right in the back of the head. buddy of mine who was with me was pretty impressed.

I do agree though, not a deer round, definitely not one to brag up on the internet as a deer round.

Take your high horse a stuff it!

Coyotes have been shot with 22rf for 100 years. Not very many coyotes complained. I myself use a Cooey model 60 with a 3-9x40 scope using CCI velocitors. I've shot them dead on the spot at 125 yards. My other guns for coyotes are a 223 using 55gr Vmax and a 12ga using 4buck. Each gun is used for different scenarios.
