My factory hunting rifle shoots between .5"-.75" all day! Really? Prove it!

Hey UTG, maybe you should start a 'My Big Bore (375 and up) will shoot .75" - 1.00" all day. Really? Prove it!' thread.....j/k.

That's a nice .416 and fine shooting thereof- very fine given the recoil, most impressive post in the thread. Suppose if it warms up around here I'll try this with my .375 H&H, we're still solidly in the deep freeze for a few months yet.

I hope this thread holds on till spring and I can get back to Whitehorse and throw in a couple tries. Yesterday it was -35 with a 30 knot North wind, not conducive to good groups!!! I have quite a few rifles that will do it as long as I can do my part. But I guess that's really the point isn't it???

Thanks!

Yes. The Barnes 350's at a bit over 2700fps do dish out a bit of wallop.

The front sling stud ripped open my front sandbag during that session....

On a sad note, I think she might have eaten the scope. Last time out it was making two seperate groups and the the scope adjustments weren't moving the impact as expected. I need to go out again with my 'good' load and try it again. It might be 'new scope time'.

Now that's a real rifle. A cold hearted  on both ends, and to anything you put on top of her. Seriously good "proper gun" shooting.

Hmmm, never thought of it that way. I guess if you count the wrecked sand bag you could add 'or under her' too... LOL.

Just a generally disagreeable beast. It's my favorite gun (right now).

Epic fail...

:(

At the range today trying my handloads in the 6.5 and 222. I didn't bring enough ammo for the 6.5X55, (but a couple of them are brilliant) for a proper group string as per thread rules as I just finished the stock and load development is underway. However, I have had a few lovely loads for the 222rem (not that either of these calibers require much thought) so here is my first attempt:

Rifle: Rem 700ADL, 222Rem
Rifle is in stock condition aside from my basement gunsmithing which involves bedding, and pillar bedding the receiver/stock and free floating the barrel. Groups were fired off a Harris bipod, and rear sandbag off a bench (I only explain this as I forgot my camera at the range, but neither of these contraptions are a mystery to a shooter)
Telescope is a Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10 x 44.
Conditions: Temp. 15 degrees Fahrenheit, wind light to gusting 3/4-full value from the left about 10-15mph peak. Cloud cover about 3 octas.
Distance of course is the required 100 yards.

Group number three was the killer, but I was unhappy with my performance considering my earlier grouping during sight in.(I bought this scope recently to upgrade from the K6, and I have now sighted it.) Clearly 3/1000 of an inch outside of the alloted 3/4ths inch disqualifies my grouping but I decided to share this conversation piece and to show that I couldn't cut the mustard when it counted.

as indicated in this picture during second sight in group.

If I could do that when it counted, this little rifle would hold it's own in the five shot target rifle standard of 1/2" or less group.

For anyone interested: The ammunition are my reloads from last year which consist of Hornady 50gr SPSX in a W-W case, Federal 205 primer, with 20gr of Re10X in the middle. This is the third use these cases have had. I do not remember the cartridge OAL.

So I am enthusiastic about this and the target rifle thread, but I have other stresses in life keeping me from mon amour avec fusil. Attempts in the future at both thread challenges!

Edit: Not that it matters, but average was 0.653"
Second Edit: Sorry for the lack of clarity and obscuration of the group sizes written - they are from left to right, top to bottom as follows:
0.514, 0.655, 0.753, 0.686 and 0.655".

I'm heading to the range tomorrow and will be trying this contest. I'll post results either way. I don't have a set of calibers, so I hope a tape measure will suffice.

I'll be shooting my Savage model 11 International Trophy Hunter XP. The only thing I have done to it is remove the Weaver scope that it came with and replaced it with a Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12 x 40DOA. I'll be using Federal Tactical 55gr FMJ factory rounds from the bulk 1000 round can.

Not sure that I can do this, but I'm going to try!

If my wife comes I'll get her to try with her .22lr also just for fun :)

I just added a requirement for everyones post. If everyone could include their group sizes in their post. Sometimes the writing on the targets are to small to read. Thanks. Have fun and shoot straight Rod

Tried again today and failed. Missed it by one HORRIBLE group.

.413" small group

I will load up some more ammo tonight and hopefully get out again tomorrow. I WILL DO THIS!

Epic fail.....

So I started off ok... My first group was at 5/8" but from there my fingers started getting too cold to feel the trigger properly.

Here's the target:

Measurement of my best:

Measurement of my worst: (Ouch...)

Here's my gun:

It's a Savage Model 11 International Trophy Hunter with the AccuTrigger. It has a Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12 x 40 scope on it with the DOA retical. Nothing changed from the way that it came out of the box other than the scope, it came with a Weaver scope on it.

And here is what I was shooting, factory loads from a bulk can of 1000:

I'll try again next weekend, but considering that I have only really been shooting for about 6 months now, I think I did pretty well! :D

My old 270 Browning Stainless Stalker with my handloads will do 1/2 MOA @ 100 and 200 yds. here's a couple of pics of my youngest daughter who's 14 now (13) when she shot these targets at our club. It was her first go round with the 270. She's shot the 6.5x55 and the 243 lots of times.

Her first shot was low, then she got her "shoot" on and put the next three together......annnnnnnd like all good groups, the best way to muck it up is to add just wuuuuun more round :) ...she wiggled the last one just left of her group.

Thanks for trying the challenge. Could you post the rest of the required pics. Also add the group sizes for all the groups. Thanks Rod

if you shoot at the same target all day, you're bound to find a few grouped inside half an inch every time. Just kidding. Theres some nice groups here.

Underthegun - my friend's T3 did the same thing as yours - 2 shots on top of each other and one "flier". His was a .300 WM and by 500 yards there was well over 3" between the two close shots and the flier.

Oh yes, one other thing, but I guess I just didn't read all of the posts, is that this is a hunting rifle challenge, so I assumed you would have to use hunting bullets.:p

3"'s at 500 yards is very good, about .6 MOA.

Tried again today. Not yet. -18c and the last group got to me.

.428"
.336" smallest group
.597"
.410"
1.232"

.600" average

I have a Nikon 4.5-14X scope I might just have to put on and get some more power over the 2.5-8X I have been using.

Am I missing something?
Shooting 5 consecutive 3 round groups is the same as shooting a 15 round group isn't it?
