Epic fail...
At the range today trying my handloads in the 6.5 and 222. I didn't bring enough ammo for the 6.5X55, (but a couple of them are brilliant) for a proper group string as per thread rules as I just finished the stock and load development is underway. However, I have had a few lovely loads for the 222rem (not that either of these calibers require much thought) so here is my first attempt:
Rifle: Rem 700ADL, 222Rem
Rifle is in stock condition aside from my basement gunsmithing which involves bedding, and pillar bedding the receiver/stock and free floating the barrel. Groups were fired off a Harris bipod, and rear sandbag off a bench (I only explain this as I forgot my camera at the range, but neither of these contraptions are a mystery to a shooter)
Telescope is a Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10 x 44.
Conditions: Temp. 15 degrees Fahrenheit, wind light to gusting 3/4-full value from the left about 10-15mph peak. Cloud cover about 3 octas.
Distance of course is the required 100 yards.
Group number three was the killer, but I was unhappy with my performance considering my earlier grouping during sight in.(I bought this scope recently to upgrade from the K6, and I have now sighted it.) Clearly 3/1000 of an inch outside of the alloted 3/4ths inch disqualifies my grouping but I decided to share this conversation piece and to show that I couldn't cut the mustard when it counted.
as indicated in this picture during second sight in group.
If I could do that when it counted, this little rifle would hold it's own in the five shot target rifle standard of 1/2" or less group.
For anyone interested: The ammunition are my reloads from last year which consist of Hornady 50gr SPSX in a W-W case, Federal 205 primer, with 20gr of Re10X in the middle. This is the third use these cases have had. I do not remember the cartridge OAL.
So I am enthusiastic about this and the target rifle thread, but I have other stresses in life keeping me from mon amour avec fusil. Attempts in the future at both thread challenges!
Edit: Not that it matters, but average was 0.653"
Second Edit: Sorry for the lack of clarity and obscuration of the group sizes written - they are from left to right, top to bottom as follows:
0.514, 0.655, 0.753, 0.686 and 0.655".
