My factory hunting rifle shoots between .5"-.75" all day! Really? Prove it!

I think no bedding would rule a lot of people out, also a factory trigger can be worked to be as good as a custom trigger....keep the challenge at .75 and see where it goes. Maybe make it an average of .75 for the 5 groups.

What would people think if I changed it to 1" at 100 yards, BUT! changed the rule so that the rifle had to be 100% stock. No bedding, no aftermarket triggers. Absolutely 100% factory (except maybe a paint job because mine is painted). If the factory trigger allows the trigger to be adjusted that would be fine but otherwise no trigger jobs. I am only thinking now. Let me know what you think.

I think you could even allow aftermarket triggers and bedding, and it would still be a very challenging and meaningful task. With some of the high quality accurate rifles out there (Tikka, some Savages) it would be "do-able", though by no means easy (!!).

Whatever the details you decide on, you have certainly set a worthy challenge.

Thanks rnbra-shooter. It was quite exciting for me to see the improvement a bedding job made on that rifle. The best 3 shot group I could manage with it before was about 1.75 - 2 MOA. I'll be giving the challenge a go in the (hopefully) near future.

I 'used to be' a TR shooter too. Sailing has since taken over my summers. Haven't competed since '91 or '92...

Sailing, hmm, what a terrible thing... a hole in the water, into which you pour money; though one great thing about sailing is that it makes shooting look cheap!! ;-)

I am finding this thread very interesting, and plan on giving it a go this spring. However, why consider changing the rules? I thought the whole purpose of this challenge was to get people who brag about how accurate their rifles are to either put up or shut up! JMHO.

Keep the original rules. Hence, the title of your thread.

The rules will remain unchanged. While .75" might be to tough for lots of people, if I changed the rules it would be less of a challenge. There are many rifles out there capable of this.

I would be unhappy if the rules changed: Missing the mark by .003" and not getting another chance at redemption... Hair pulling! Although a completely unmodified factory rifle, as it was bought off the shelf with the 1" minimum group size would still be an acceptable challenge. I shot many different loads through my Sako 270win last year, and have a load that is promising... if I don't let it down. bah, .003", maybe I should try measuring with the caliper upside down? ;)

I tried again today and failed. I keep getting one group over .75".
Here is my rifle. It is a Tikka T3 lite 30/06 using 185gr Berger VLD Hunting bullets with IMR 4064 powder.

At least we thought there were judging by the posts over the years. :)

I expect many rifles are capable of meeting the criteria, and passing this challenge. Yeah, given that no one has yet fullfilled the requirements probably sorted out a few more. Perusing the other failed attempts, the rifles in those attempts are very capable, but their owners let them down in one group. Looking forward to trying again to squeeze out that last 0.003" of that "one" of my own groups.

Nice try again Underthegun. I have all of my loads ready but can't get to the range until very late February or early March.........can't wait!

I suspect that the lack of attempts is due to the weather.
Not at all. The gun range (Medicine Hat) is closed, however for a very good reason. A berm is being built-up between the 100 meter and 200-300 meter shooting distances. Moreover, my wife and I are baby-sitting our grandaughter for the next week while my daughter and son-in-law bask in the Mexico sun..................family is more important (comes first) than anything else.

Tried today with the Model 70 XTR featherweight and failed. To be fair this was strictly a load development session. A couple of 1.00" groups and one 0.67" that I think I am going to test further. I will definitely be back to beat this challenge!
