A friend of mine who is a machinist wanted to try a 3D surface project on his desktop CNC so one of the things I suggested was some 1911 grips.

We've almost finished this set, they just need to be counter bored, then maybe engraved. There was an error in the path and it nicked a little bit of the grip on the bottom, so these one's aren't perfect, but eh, not bad for the 2nd try at making a grip.

Thought you guys might want to check em out. Ended up being a pretty fun project. Once the non dicked up set is finished I might try duracoating them or something.

Here are a few pics:

The GSG wanted to try them too: :D

This was our first attempt and got dicked because someone put it in the fixture the wrong way round (not me :p) Anyway we decided to use it to do a test engraving and try out the counter bore, which went fine.

Things we learned: Use a fixture when possible...and use it properly. :HR:

When are you going to try a complete gun? Ever check out: DEFCAD.ORG?

This 3D replication has made any gun/magazine ban null and void.

Cool. I would get them anodized, not duracoated. Also maybe make a set out of micarta or similar.

Yeah anodizing would be better, but I was just thinking about duracoating or maybe even just spray painting them temporarily to get some ideas of what they'd look like in different colours. To keep the theme of the black/white kinda thing going on with my norc I was thinking of maybe spraying em black, then filling the engraving with white wax (again just to get an idea of what it'd look like)

I gotta say though, when we pulled them off the machine I wasn't sure if I was going to like the bare aluminum since I'm not usually one for shiny things, but on my norc I kinda like it.

Thanks for the micarta idea, defs something look into.

Also thanks for kind words guys. We were kinda toying with the idea of selling them. Also maybe doing custom engravings although that might be a total pain, would be really cool though.

If we were to sell them would you guys just like the bare metal, or anodized, engraved, what?

I would be into anodized and/or engraved, but leave the choice to the customer and offer all 3 options!

Yeah leaving it up to the Customer is the way I'd like to do it. Just might make putting orders together take longer depending on what they want.

Anyway I'll run it by my buddy. We're planning to knock out another prototype set just to work out any issues that might be in the codes or our process and see where it goes from there.

In the meantime, anymore ideas about engravings?
