Is the 5" S&W 460V available in Canada?

I'm shocked these aren't sold out everywhere. The 5" is unlikely to come back to Canada as I have read S&W has stopped production on the 5" and is just selling off inventory. Evidently the 3" and 6" make the 5" less popular in the states, but here in Canada we can't get the 3"...

Such a versatile revolver. Can shoot .45 Colt, 454 Casul and 460 Magnum. What's not to like? The ports should make 45 Colt feel like .38 SPL gallery loads...

I believe S&W 460v is back in production. So they are no longer a discontinued model. Perhaps "V" stands for Versatile or the Roman numeral "5"...or both.
I have some 454 Casull and Hornady 460 Mags ready to pump thru mine. (Just waiting for the CFO papers) I understand the 45LC is very tame thru the 460v..... similar to shooting 22mag.
For the hight price of 45LC vs 44mag...I'd rather buy the 44mag and shoot it through my 4.2" Redhawk.

Nothing, I just didn't buy one and got this instead to go with the 4.2" 686 I ordered last week ;) Methinks a lot of revolver shooting will ensue this summer.

My mistake...I thought you bought the 4.2" 629. I think you made a good decision to go with the 460v!

I typically buy the federal lead swc flying ashtray .45LC when I buy factory (rare) as I reload this calibre for my SAA's.

Last time I checked it was cheaper than .44 mag.

I have a box of winchester super x 460 en-route from can am to try out, but will likely stick to reloading after that. $80 shipped for a box of 20 is steep but I could not locate any locally in Ottawa.

I tried to "learn" about reloading and to get a better understanding about the start up cost for ALL the equipment/materials, manuals etc. Basically, it just made my head spin! Single stage vs Progressive?!! Dies, scales, calipers, etc.
All I'm interested in reloading is 44mag and any ammo that feeds my 460v. From what I gathered its going to cost me about $1000 for everything I need. Comes down to how much I plan to shoot my canons I guess.
I bought 4 boxes(all they had) of Hornady 460 mag for $39/box and a box of Win 454 Casull @ $31. Rem UMC 180gr 44mag cost me about $33/50. This stuff really booms and flames!
I think I'll be buying factory ammo(and save my brass) until I really get motivated to reload.

For the volume of 460 shells you will shoot you don't need to spend $1000. I only use a single stage press and it's fine. Anything I shoot enough of to use a progressive press (9mm and .38 SPL) I just buy cheap factory fodder as my time is too valuable to spend it reloading 2000 rounds.

If I ever go progressive it will be due to 45 LC.

A decent one calibre setup could be had under $400 new based around a lee classic cast press which is no slouch.

PS: if you do go progressive, Dylan is purportedly the way to go and will coat a good deal more than $1000 to get up and running properly.

45long colt in my 4608 3/8 sure does fell like 38special.

That's about what I though.

I now wish John Ross would work with the Performance Centre to offer the 5" 460V in a Ross Half-lug variant with tensioned muzzle nut like they do with the 500.

Have a look here:

I find EVERY S&W revolver looks better with a half lug ;) The 4.2" 629 is ###y just for that reason!

Half lug is ugly IMO .... The full lug helps with recoil i wish it had more underlug weight

Picked up mine 2 weeks ago in the EE makes the 686 look like a toy lol

To each his own, I really like the looks and balance of a half-lug. Lucky for you to have found a used 5" in the EE - wish I could have found one there too! These buggers are damn pricey when bought new ;) About $1500 all-in.

My 686 also has a full-lung and could easily have a half-lug as compared to the 460, it's a pussy can in even the hottest 357 loads.

I've looked into the single calibre kit but I need to research a lot more because I'd like to reload 44mag as well 460mag.
What are the chances a single press can load the 3x 460v ammo types? (45LC, 454 Casull, 460mag)

That's a no you need two separate dies the 45lc and 454 are close but the 460 won't bottom out enough I am in the process of setting up my press for this because 3.75 a round is way to pricey

What are the chances that a single calibre press can load 44mag, 45LC, and 454 Casull? I would consider reloading if this was possible. I guess I really should be asking in the Ammo/reloading section.
460mag for $3.75/rnd? I bought Hornady's for under $2.00/rnd. Still expensive AFAIC. Is there a difference?
btw...I was just teasing you about your 460v...well done!

Yea I know lol :)

The hornady is cheap compared to the federal with barnes.. 31.00 for a box of hornady 75.00 for federal with barnes expander. The barnes expands way more then the hornady

I have seen video of the barnes explode a 12x12 block of ballistic gel the hornady starts to brake up at about 8-10 inches

I have no idea about the .44 mag I dont own that cal so I never checked into it

I would be happy to be able to buy a steady supply of Hornady at $31/box in the GTA. I wouldn't have an issue with it's expansion characteristics vs the federal as my range only lets me shoot at paper...I know sad.

A press and the basic gear will work with virtually all calibers. You just use different dies for each new calibre, usually about $50 per die set.
