Life is short. Too many people around me have died of cancer this past year and I figured it's time to sell a bunch of my Remmy 700 builds and buy a Surgeon 591 for a tactical build of some sort. I figured from Mystic Player's advice about building and blueprinting an M700 action, I may as well spend the entire $$$ on a custom tactical receiver; great advice from the master! I had to buy one!!

Here is what it looks like out of the plastic bag, as it arrived from R P S Intn'l in Spruce Grove, AB.

Another picture of the "in-the-white" finish... :D

Notice the bolt release, easier to deal with when hanging the trigger assembly, the factory M700 Rem trigger is goofy hanging on there with the spring that allows the bolt release to work well. It's a tough install.

So because I am a military / parkerizing kind of guy (and I can Cerakote or DuraKote down the road), I just had to degrease and parkerize it in my garage tonight.

Here are the after parkerizing pictures with lots and lots of oil on the freshly 'etched' surface. Remember that the phosphoric acid "etches" the metal surface, making it rougher and more able to hold the protective oil to it. It plain and simple looks tacticool...

As you can see, the bolt handle and the shroud are likely made with a little more stainless content in them so the phosphoric acid ain't going to do it's magic here.

The bolt body darkened a fair amount, but nowhere near as BLACK (reminds me of M14 TRW black ) as the receiver came. Life is good! :dancingbanana:

Now it's ready for the barrel (well, I gotta parkerize that too) to be fitted and headspaced for my .260 Rem build.

Will keep you all posted as this project carries on with it's journey. It's not the destination.... it's the journey!

Next week, I'm having my .260 Rem factory M700 barrel fitted to this receiver. More pics to come after the project comes together. It's all good fun!

Enough said!

Cheers,
Barney

Looks great, BTW what is the little part beside the firing pin?

It's the bolt's innards, firing pin and cocking thingamajigger/humdinger/jimsumsaddle, :D My secret agent gunsmith with OpSec clearance will be helping me assemble that bolt. Unless YouTube can help me get sorted out.

Cheers,
Barney

Are you going to put it in your AX chassis?

Down the road, YES... I just gotta save up for one. Right now I have an HS Precision LTR stock for the coming season. My .260 Rem factory barrel is cut down to 20" to look like an SPS Tac .260 just like my existing .22-250 20" SPS Tac barrel.

It's nice having choices. I like to hunt with my sniper rigs, in this case with the Surgeon 591, and 20" .260 barrel, I can do groundhogs, coyotes, varmints, and medium game if the opportunity presents itself on the ground blind. :D

Cheers,
Barney

Looks good Barney!!!!! What MOA is the scope rail????

Factory specs say 20 MOA! :dancingbanana:

No more screws and mounting base! No more issues of Heavy Duty 8 x 40 tpi screw upgrades/drilling & tapping, etc. Now I just gotta read the wind correctly at the sniper matches by the ORA.

Cheers,
Barney

That is one beautiful action. I would appreciate your opinion on the trigger lock time. I've read Surgeons are improvements over Remys. Your thoughts?

Looks awesome. I just got a new precision rig and I tossed around the idea of Rem vs custom, I went with the Rem because I am an impatient sort. But I will do the custome route soon, very soon. Keep us up to date on how the build progresses.

This thread made me laugh, it's like someone was spying on me. I'm working on my own Surgeon 260 build. I've got my 591 action, a Shilen select match barrel in 6.5mm and a rifle basics trigger so far. I haven't picked up a chassis but I'm leaning toward an AX. What bullets are you planing on using?

If I had to get a rem clone, this be it, surgeon make one of the finest action in the market!

Booolits? I've got a few hundred of the 108 gr Scenars left over from the 2011 NSCC National Precision Rifle matches hosted by the DCRA in Connaught Ranges, Ottawa. And then I bought a few hundred 139 gr Scenars from Ellwood Epps in Washago, ON.

I've got an older Rem M700 factory trigger from a Varmint Special several years ago. It's tuned down to 2.5 lbs and life is good and predictable. I love these old school triggers. They work well for me.

I'm using the existing bottom BDL or SPS BDL metal from another SPS rifle I had kicking around. The stock is a HS Precision LTR in Desert ... have a look at this older pic of my .22-250 SPS TAC with 1 in 9" twist factory Rem M700 barrel that used to be a .223, and I had Doug at Ellwood Epps rechamber to .22-250.

I want to be able to hunt with this Surgeon 591'ed .260 Varmint Rig... :D Heeere kitty, kitty, kitty!

Barney
