One of the industry people who is deeply involved in the whole T97 saga told me yesterday that, as of two weeks ago, the RCMP firearms lab in Ottawa has not recieved a new sample for a "T97NSR". So, the sample isn't even in yet. Perhaps it is still being built in China. Who knows?
The last attempt to get a "Type 97" classified was the "T97NS Prototype" which was found to be "Prohibited" last year (on the basis that it fell within the definition of "automatic firearm" as that term is defined in the Criminal Code - same as the T97A's).
The same industry guy is telling me that, you can probably bank on the RCMP waiting around for 18 months to even look at a T97 prototype. Whether that is true or not, who knows, but one thing is for sure: No FRT is going to be issued unless and until a working sample is recieved and tested.
That is on the NS side. CanAm is also going to be submitting a sample under a separate process, but that hasn't happened yet either.
So, can it be done? Yes, I don't see why not. My view is that they are going to need a totally different reciever, as well as a totally different trigger group from what was used on the T97A. Whether the appropriate steps have been taken to do this, I'm not sure. Whatever happens it won't be happening this year. I think the best estimate is probably something like 2 years until you will see T97's in the stores - early 2015 maybe.
