Hey guys!

I usually shoot over iron with my milsurps but I am interested in geting into more precision shooting. The thing is I have no idea what would be a good platform.

I don't want to put $1000 into a rifle but I am looking for suggestions on a rifle and what would be a good scope for it. My club's rifle range max's out at 300m. I don't hunt so I am not looking at stopping power.

I am sure everyone has their favorites but I am interested to see what people might suggest.

Thanx for your help.

Options are like well you know. Best advice is try to find a club in your area that caters to the style of shooting you want to get into. Then checkout what the boys are shooting. Maybe they will let you shoot a few shots. Judging by your comments, money is an issue. Maybe a Savage might fit your wallet. Good luck.

For 300m shooting, one of the best bang for your buck guns is the Remington SPS 700 Varmint in .223 Rem or .308 Win. New with a good enough scope will be under the $1000 mark.

And later on when you decide to upgrade, just about any accessory you can dream of is already available to fit the Remington 700.

That's about the best advice you can get. You could also get a SPS Tactical which is, essentially, the same rifle. Bone stock it will shoot well enough and later as VLT79 has said it is easily upgrade-able.

Here is a pic of my upgraded SPS just so you can see what can be done down the road if you so choose:

you are not going to get a precision rifle and a scope for under $1000, you can maybe get a heavy barreled varmint gun for 700 or 800, a savage or rem 700, then you'll have to spend about the same money on a scope, something at least 12 power and then rings and bases.

so bare minimum your looking at about $1500 and you still wont have a real precision rifle, but sub moa should be possible with good hand loads or factory match ammo

caliber: .223 is the cheapest

you will also need a bipod or a pedestal rest of some kind and a rear sand bag so another $200 or $300

hope I was some help, im no expert by any means but I do know that it takes money to buy or build a precision rig - if you increase your budget to like $2000 your options will be significantly better

If you going to spend that much Money, Do it Right!.

If you want to build it, Do it with Style!

...200 yards with a $537.00 Remington SPS Varmint (bedded into a Remington VLS stock mind you)...kinda makes some big dollar rifles blush a little! LOL!
The scope was/is a Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12 x 40AO that cost me $365 with cheap rings and bases, the VLS stock cost me $115, the JB Weld for the bedding was $9.
Total: $1026.00

My apologies you were right and I was wrong! It isn't possible to have a precision rifle for under $1000...except that in factory trim with the cheap plastic stock and much more expensive GMM ammo it would shoot 0.981" 3 shot groups at the same distance for a grand total of $911.00...but I didn't have a camera then to take pics, so it never happened right?!?!?

Savage MkII in 22LR with a heavy barrel. EGW 20 MOA base. Burris Sig Zee rings w/ inserts. $325 to $450 depending on what version you get. Mine is the dirt cheap FV.

Lots of great scope options in the $300 to 800 range. Best entry level is the elite 3200 10X. Does the job nicely. I would lean you to the sightron family but this will blow your short term budget BUT save long term as you will not need to "upgrade" later.

Now get some decent match ammo and learn how to shoot and dope the air.

50yds is like 100yds with a 308/223.
100yds is 300m
200yds is 500m
300yds is 1000yds. So you can simulate the same needs of precision SHOOTING and CONDITION READING.

This is what separates one from just making alot of noise and sending lead downrange.

If you are on a tight budget, there is no better way to learn WITH accuracy. by the way, my Savage and SK rifle match ammo (approx $7/box of 50), lets me shoot with a similar on target accuracy as my F TR rifles which cost almost $1 per bang.

Good luck...

Jerry

Only 5-round groups count.

Now if he posted that in the hunting section might be a little different but this isnt the case here.

LMFAO!!! Had I put a pic of a 5 shot group someone would have said "Only 10 round groups count...BLA BLA BLA!!!". And btw, that's actually 3 shots in under 45 seconds...and that doesn't count either because you are suppose to let the barrel cool off between shots...according to the "experts" anyway! LOL! Fact is, this rifle and load combo is impressive, to say the least, especially when you consider just how cheap it was. It's hard for guys that admit that, after they spent 5-10 times that amount and have trouble getting the same results...isn't it?!?! It's kind of like beating a guy at Handicap Trap when he's using a $80 000 Krieghoff and all you have is $300 Remington 870 Wingmaster field gun from the early 70's and he goes on to tell you it's beginner's luck. Yup, been there, done that...and then did it again a few more times just to prove a point!!! :)

The OP is on a budget and and there's lots of proof out there that you don't need to spend large amounts to be competitive and have fun! At the end of the day, trigger time is what will make him a better shot and not equipment that will require him to mortgage his house!!!

Nothing to do with what you spent. Its the precision rifle forum. Most of the time they are used in matches and last I checked they shoot more then 3 rounds in a string. If you want to see what a combo can do shoot a 5 shot group. Can post a 2 shot group of .2" if you want that doesnt mean anything at all. Now a 5 or 10 shot group inside .5" that shows something
