Moose shot POINT BLANK & runs away!

Now here's a video we can discuss...

Thoughts? Is the bull dead & just doesn't know it? Should he have fired a quicker follow-up shot? Did the bullet come apart at such close range???

Looks to me like he hit the upper neck area, may have just went through some fatty tissue
Had time for a follow up shot before the dog jumped in range
But I don't think he saw where the initial bullet hit...the camera guy should have though and should have said something
 
This is why I don't hunt big game with freakin' dogs. Good for keeping bears away, great for fetching ducks, but a major a$$ pain when you're trying to hunt.

They have a different way of hunting in other countries, in this case, they use the dogs to run the moose out of the bush... In this specific video, I would say the dog should have been on leash because it did get in the way of a follow up shot & was not being used to run the moose at that moment.

Dogs are extremely useful for big game hunting, not just in locating/moving game, but recovering them as well... In fact, you can not big game hunt in Germany without proving you have a trained dog to aid in recovery OR access to one.

And I agree guys, looks like the hit was high & to far forward... Wonder if they recovered it?

It was the dog that chased this moose out..You can see that @ the 8-12 sec mark of the vid, just circled around the camera, and then back.....
Shooter error, in not taking a second shot IMO...
I don't blame him for botching the first shot, as close quarter shots are the hardest to make..I can only imagine the adrenaline rush this fella had...With the good traind dogs over there I am sure the animal was recovered..
 
He had loads of time and opportunity before the dog jumped in the way. When the bull was down you could see the steam coming out of the nostrils that showed it was breathing. Shoot and be ready for the follow up. This was a major f-up.

And I'm sure that if he had a ultra premium bionic bullet fired out of a uber mag that bull would of been a bang flop and not a bang flop flop flop run:)


Funny how he wasn't wearing the latest camo either.

Good eyes captonion!!! And... EXACTLY why dogs are so useful while hunting!!!

Dogs or no dogs, to sit and watch the Moose thrash around like that when you have a repeating rifle in your hands is absolutely wrong. I would rather let him have another that was unnecessary than have a wounded animal get away.

Just my opinion.
 
had to watch a few times, but his shot was the equivalent of the "hollywood shoulder shot" should have put another in the brain pan. My guess the animal suffered a long painful death

ive been in the brush for moose here in ontario because of the close range they get(muzzle to about 100 yards is common) i always go with someone else in fact id like to get my hands on a older .500 BPE double rifle i treat them as DG because well they are maybe if the camera man had a rifle it would have turned out different but i cant imagine the adrenaline flowing maybe thats why he did not take another shot its not easy whe you have a 1000+ pound animal running at you
 
Couple things- the dog is a Norwegian elkhound and are used specifically for hunting moose. It did what its supposed to (bring the moose to you or get it to stand still so you can catch up and shoot it) and if you listen at that end the language sure sounds Scandanavian.
Shot was in the hump which will flatten a moose like that and can actually be a great shot IF you hit one of the tiny spurs off the spine. In this case I'm betting he had the misfortune of having the bullet pass between them (and at that distance likely not having a chance to open up) so the animal ended up with a rather minimal wound.
While this would be a complete mess here in Canada, the dog will bay up that moose again shortly and I'd be surprised if it's life isn't ended by another bullet off camera.
