give me a hint, a pump, semi, hinged, bolt action shotgun? Do you want to shoot clays? trap? slug gun? 3 gun? slugs? Range as well as a little hunting ducks? bunnies?

Check them out and see which one fits the best. Don't ignore used, some fine older guns to be had including the Winchester 1300 and older Remingtons. Multi choke and Multi barrels will expand the usefulness. You might even find a couple of older models that together cost less than a newer model.

Mossberg 500 combo comes with a few barrels very versatile tons of accessories and upgrades
basically the 10/22 of shotguns.

about half the price my first shotgun and i love it
of course if money is no object then there are lots of choices
extra barrels
Prob need to add one of these if you shoot slugs as i must at the indoor range

Agreed. Especially if you are budget minded.
If you are in Edmonton swing by the Cabelas. I was there yesterday and they had 2 like new 870 Wingmaster 12 gauges in their gun library. 1 of them actually appears to have never been shot the other has maybe 100-200 rounds thru it. Both are newer production and Light contour, Rem-Choke 28" barrels.
IMO, you should pick up a used Remington 870 Wingmaster with 28" (or 26" - doesn't really matter) barrel, rem choke and 3" chamber. There's no need to go any longer w/modern loads and the appropriate choke. You'll need to grab a late 80's or newer model to get the threaded Rem-Choke that allows you to swap your chokes. It shouldn't cost you more than $500-600, with a few chokes.
If you have zero interest in hunting real birds, you could jump right into an O/U. I wouldn't take a shortcut and buy a low quality one, and unfortunately the decent ones are all expensive, even used ($1500+).
