Hey all im looking for a first time shotgun purchase to add to my libray. Something good for range use..advanced shooters and newbies would enjoy. Any suggestions?

I mean..who doesnt feel badass pumping a shotgun?

I like this as a versitile combo, they may be in short supply though:

Benelli
Browning
Mossberg
Ithaca

Check them out and see which one fits the best. Don't ignore used, some fine older guns to be had including the Winchester 1300 and older Remingtons. Multi choke and Multi barrels will expand the usefulness. You might even find a couple of older models that together cost less than a newer model.

"Advanced shooters" will use an O/U or Auto loader at the range. There is still the odd serious shooter using a pump, but not that many. But if you are serious about going "Badass" get an older Wingmaster.

Mossberg 500 combo comes with a few barrels very versatile tons of accessories and upgrades
basically the 10/22 of shotguns.
or
Maverick 88 great gun and compatible with all 500 accessories and barrels etc except for fore end components
about half the price my first shotgun and i love it
of course if money is no object then there are lots of choices

If you are in Edmonton swing by the Cabelas. I was there yesterday and they had 2 like new 870 Wingmaster 12 gauges in their gun library. 1 of them actually appears to have never been shot the other has maybe 100-200 rounds thru it. Both are newer production and Light contour, Rem-Choke 28" barrels.

IMO, you should pick up a used Remington 870 Wingmaster with 28" (or 26" - doesn't really matter) barrel, rem choke and 3" chamber. There's no need to go any longer w/modern loads and the appropriate choke. You'll need to grab a late 80's or newer model to get the threaded Rem-Choke that allows you to swap your chokes. It shouldn't cost you more than $500-600, with a few chokes.

If you have zero interest in hunting real birds, you could jump right into an O/U. I wouldn't take a shortcut and buy a low quality one, and unfortunately the decent ones are all expensive, even used ($1500+).

Hey, I was going to grab it next weekend for myself, but P&D has a Remington 870 wingmaster for $250. Saw it on saturday, would no surprise me if it is gone already.

I have zero knowledge in shotguns, but thinking about one for range and birds hunting. Would Browning Maxus have advantage over 870 as a general purpose gun ? (price is different)
