Marlin 60, is it any good?

When I was running my shop, I got to work on a lot of rifles.
The Marlins are good .22s. There was the occasional broken firing pin, sometimes the synthetic buffers cracked. Maybe that was an extreme cold issue.
Disassembling the trigger mechanism is a bit of a pain, with the little e-clips, but they are fine rifles.

Thank you all for the input! I've made up my mind. Will go to Bass Pro Friday lunch time to get one :)
Can't wait!!!

You guys are all nuts! Get a 10/22, but be prepared to spend about $100 bucks more to do so. Then just replace the barrel, stock, sights, trigger, sear, extractor, bolt, bolt release and bolt handle...and you're all set, with a gun that is demonstrably superior.

Or just buy the Marlin, take it out of the box and shoot it for the rest of your life with zero problems.

Just to let you know, remington bought out marlin a year or two ago. I have a marlin xt-22 and love it, but I will NEVER buy a remington made marlin. All the quality of a marlin will be lost with a company like remington. Get a Ruger instead.

Great point! :) I don't want to modify it at all. Just want to take it out of the box, clean it up, load it up and shoot it at the range.

Yes, I'm aware Remington bought Marlin. But I don't think they changed up the tooling or did any other capital investment changes. I believe they're still the same Marlins you used to know since the equipment they're using is the same.

I have looked at a few new marlins and they seem pretty good still to me.

I learned to shoot with an old Marlin 60. My dad still uses the same gun 15 years later to routinely deal with pests, and was using it before I was born. I don't know what the modern ones are like (especially given the Marlin fiasco with Remington), but if nothing substantial has changed, I'd highly recommend a Model 60. As an earlier poster suggested, you might want to replace the sights but otherwise, it's good to go out of the box. My dad had a peep sight installed on it.

I currently own a 10/22 and I can say it's a very fun gun, and great for different reasons, but for 'real' firearm work the Marlin is a superb firearm.

Remlin centerfires had a lot of issues during the changeover, but the rimfires stayed pretty solid. That there dressed up gopher destroyer I posted was a 2010 Remlin and the only complaint I had was that it didn't much like Winchester 555s.

Спасибо, товарищ командир! :)

I hope so! I wouldn't mind getting another marlin in .17HMR

Savage 93R17BVSS .17HMR and Marlin 60SS .22LR

I wouldn't sell either. They're keepers.

The only question is whether I shall get it scoped or not. They sell both versions. The difference is maybe $20.

Oh yes; the pre-scoped Marlins. Don't do it. The scope they come with I would consider under-designed for the rigors of being attached to a $40 BB gun. Get the unscoped and pick up an inexpensive Tasco or Centerpoint; it'll cost you an extra $20~ or so, but you'll have clear glass, clicking dials and a 32mm reticule.

Thanks :) Will go with unscoped one and will throw a scope on top. What kind of rails are on it? Do you know what size?

Standard rimfire dovetail. The Tasco and Centerpoint rimfire scopes come with rings that fit them though, so it's no hardship. Centerpoint rings hold better, I found; the Tasco rings tended to slip for some reason.

If you go on amazon.ca, a company called UTG makes a dovetail-to-Weaver mount that is actually quite good, and only costs like $17. I picked up one of those a one of their bipods for like $60 shipped. Good bipod, too.

Also, if you are going to be putting some mileage on your new tube-fed, consider toying around with making your own quick-loaders:

I made 30 of those sticks out of copper tubing, and sewed that quiver for them out of an old pair of jeans. Out on the gopher patch with 420 rounds on my hip was quite probably the best time ever. And it cost me less than $60 to build all of them... which is the cost of roughly 3 box magazine on any rifle. After some practice I was able to reload near as fast as someone with a boxmag.

I could just do it a helluva lot more often. :D

The rails are standard 3/8-inch rimfire dovetails.

I was browsing around Rimfire Central and came across a thread that made me smile, especially after reading this one earlier. A fellow posted a question, asking how to go about removing the barrel from his new Marlin 795 (same as a model 60, but detachable box mag) to upgrade to a heavier one for better accuracy. One of the first responses suggested that he should at least test fire the stock barrel, because "after all, it's a Marlin, not a 10/22"! :)

You can also make Quick Loaders with arrow shafts, that's what I did .#got the arrows free from a friend bowhunter..so it cost me only the price of the clips at the end ..a couple of $$..works great

Great idea with tubes! Thought I don't envision myself in a situation where I would have to quickly reload. 14 rounds is more than enough for hunting and other situations :)

Went to BASS PRO today over lunch. They're out of stock!!! :-( But the manager told me an interesting fact -- amongst 50+ stores that Bass Pro has in N.America, the one in Vaughan is consistently #3 in sales but is treated like garbage in terms of stock. They pack up a pallet for them in the head office, send it off and only let them know two days in advance what's in there. They mix and match, they cannot even order anything in the store. That's how the U.S. is treating Canada -- like second hand citizens!!!
