I have a 870 tactical express with a 6 shot mag and 18" barrel. I've been thinking of getting a mag extension for it, but I have a few questions. Can I only get a 1 shot because a 2 shot will stick out way past the end of the muzzel? And do I have to get a differnt spring?

Thanks in advance

I have the same mag tube and barrel also. I know the extension past the barrel is okay. But i wonder if i need a new spring or the one that comes with the +2 is good enough?

Stock spring shouldn't be a problem. I have lots of +2 extensions and the springs they came with are all different lengths so it doesn't seem to be an exact science. I would at least try it first with the stock one and see if it works reliably.

Get a +1 if you want. If you are only shooting slugs, you could put a +2 but it will also look a little silly(not that it matters).

Even with a +2, there is NO way the shot is dispersed enough to strike the tube at that distance from the muzzle.

Gosh I had NO idea the new Remingtons looked so damn UGLY.... why the hell did they change the barrel ring/mag tube lengths??? It looks retarded! (IMHO)

+1 extensions are so expensive, looking at 75+ dollars for one. Not too many companies makes them either. SJ and Vancomp only? not sure if its worth the money to make it look flush with the barrel.

I got a S&J 1 shot extension today, but when I went to install it I ran into a few problems. First, the threads dont seem to be excatly the same. I'm still able to get it on all the way by hand, but it takes quite a bit of force. My second problem is that the spring is too short by 3/4 of a inch. I was hesitant, but I just streched it out the little that I needed. It should hold me over till I get a longer one to replace it. Dose anybody know where I can get a longer spring?

Now my main concern is this.

The express modle has these stupid detents in the mag tube.

Those detents hold this plastic thingy in place.

So I have to remove those detents, but once I do that there is no going back. Has anybody here installed a S&J 1 shot extension on a 870 tactical express? I'm just worried because the threads on the extension are not engaging the threads on the mag tube perfectly. I dont know if thats just how it is. Any advice or recomendations are welcome

I have two S&J extensions. Both fit an 870 and hp9 perfectly. Contact Simon and he'll fix it.

Ive removed a TON of dimples. Relax. Everyone needs to do it. :)

File them down or drift them out with deep sockets and a hammer. That's the hard way. Easy way is to drill them out and file the holes smooth. Extension covers it, and has no negative effects.

Thanks for the advice! I had the drill out ready to remove the dimples, but right as I was about to drill them out I lost my nerve. Lol. I figured I should consult the professionals first.
I take it Simon is from S&J hardware? It's not to bad threading on the extension, but its nowhere near as easy to thread on as the factory barrel nut.

My stock mag spring was too short to work with the extension, so I ordered a 7 shot mag spring from S&J and it showed up today. But it is way too long.

its about about 9" longer than the stock spring.

I tried it out, but the seventh shell wont fit. I'm guessing I have to cut off a chunck of the spring. And idea how much I should cut off?

Try half a coil at a time. You can't cut it back on. Don't ask how I learned that :D

lol. That would of taken a while. The 7th shell wasent going in by about 1&1/2", so I knew it needed a quite a bit taken off. I started by taking off 5" and then took it down 1 coil at a time till I got it perfect.

Looks much better now.

What, you dont approve? I'm going to go strip off the duracoat and have it re-blued now because you dont like it.:jerkit:

It's 10 times better than the crap blueing job that remington did. If it got even 1 drop of water on it, it would start to rust before your eyes.
Plus it's highly tactical. If I'm holding this thing and walk into the forest I literally dissapear. Ever seen predator?

Given that you had the plastic thingy to retain the old cap, check to see if your barrel has a detent to retain the new extension. If it doesn't click when you tighten it and just friction fits then you'll need a detent to keep it from backing off while shooting. You can either drill your barrel and install a small BB or install a sling plate with a detent. It would suck to watch the extension and spring take off downrange.

It dosent have these detents you speak of, and it dosent click either when I tighten it. But it seems like it's not going to back off, I wont know till I get it out. I really had to tourqe on it to get it tight enough that the barrel wouldnt move, and I can bairly get it off by hand. Do you think a lock washer would do the trick?
