NOtsorichguy, what do you mean we don't have MSR's here?

A modern sporting rifle is a hunting or varmit rifle built off an AR 15 pattern. Ergo since our AR 15s are range only firearms they cannot be MSRs.....

I do, and that is what I use it for.

By this I assume you say that you have rifle built off an AR pattern that you take to the USA to hunt prairie dogs or some such. If not then please set me straight.

An ACR, XCR, Tavor or RFB (just to name a few) are not "Modern Sporting Rifles" as they are not built off of an AR15 pattern......

You did say please......

First off I would say all of the rifles you listed above are much more modern than the AR-15.

Maybe instead of constantly refering new shooters of the black rifle genre to an "embarassing" list of non-restricted black rifles we need a Modern Sporting Rifle category.
By calling non-restricted semis Modern Sporting Rifles we, the shooting community, are framing the category instead of the antis, and this will really be the crux of the argument when any arguments around reclassification happens in the future. Reframing the argument accurately reframes the gun from assault rifle to a noble tool and hunting/sporting implement which is exactly what it is. It takes the user to a supposed higher category from mall ninja to noble hunter and marksmen.

Non the less I would still call the AR a sporting rifle, because it is used in legitimate shooting sports.

P.S.No offense meant to mall ninjas.

I'm for the change if only to make the situation clearer for more people and because it makes it easier for us to be clear when talking with people that are outside of our hobby/sporting groups for whatever reason.

I used the term "black rifle" in an email to a very well educated and intelligent friend who confused the message with some sort of racial intent. A few years ago, the whole issue would have been simpler as all AR pattern rifles were black and the number of non-AR rifles were fewer. Now we see modern rifles that are green, tan white and combinations of colours. "Modern Sporting Rifle" is at least a definition that most of us can relate to; ie a rifle that is used for sporting purposes that isn't constructed with a fixed wood stock and is modifiable to suit our various purposes.
