1. 6.5x55 in a custom Husky-FN action, MacMillan Edge, fluted match barrel (light all around rifle). Classic, yet modern.
2. A.H. Fox 16 bore double
3. Marlin model 56, .22. It was my father's and the firearm that means the most to me.
The #1 slot above is where I have the most trouble choosing. I love the Swede but if game larger than deer/black bears was going to be a regular occurance again then something like my pre-64 model 70 in .300 H&H, or a Husky-FN .30-06 might have to replace it. Who knows, maybe the old Husky-FN in 9.3x62 that is enroute will become a contender for the #1 spot.
I quickly get to thinking that I would keep at least one lever and despite my affection for the 86 and 71 Winchesters, it would either be a 92 in 44-40 or a 94 in .32 Special. Then I would be trying to sneek in a small game center fire and that would be a .223 sporter with a quick twist barrel. My old Savage 99A in .250 would be a sentimental contender here too.
While I have no intention at this point to drop all the way down to three firearms, I have been in a reducing mood for the past few years. My priority has switched from collecting to using and from groups to game. Yesterday I spent most of the afternoon with my two girls out in my woodlot having a fire and target practicing with an old Cooey model 39, single shot .22. It is times like those that remind me to cherish and pursue the memories instead of the commodity. That motivates me to sell some guns so that I can finally travel west for a mule deer hunt and a few other "bucket list" items.
Good on you Ardent. I can't wait to read about your lion hunt!
