I'd be more concern that the original owner is the one that loosened the extension then move a bum barrel.


This happens because people torque on the flash hider while putting the force into the barrel nut.
You're suppose to put the barrel in the a to do that.
 
Well i ordered the DD barrel any way.... Ill keep talking with S&J further and if anything changes well then awesome!...maybe just credit towards something else. IDK, but either way im glad to have diverted disaster here. $300 more is alot better out of my pocket than missing digits or injury!

Check your builds guys!
 
That's not the first time I hear of S&J barrels coming loose. That's the kind of thing that is not supposed to be able to happen, like never, ever ever... on a properly made and assembled barrel. That's a huge issue.

I was "considering" their barrels, but now I just can't put any trust in them.

Considering the amount of torque the barrel is supposed to be in the barrel extension, this neither could be an issue on a properly made barrel.

Yeah, I've heard this argument before. The fact of the matter is, putting torque into the barrel while installing the muzzle is not the correct way, it's a common n00b mistake, and it's this mistake (tho' I doubt any would admit to it) that has exposed this flaw in past S&J barrels. It's not suppose to come loose, but it can.

I've gotten several barrels from S&J, using the correct install method, I've never had a problem. I was a n00b too once, and learned the hard way how not to install the muzzle.

That being said, I'm sure by now, S&J would have this issue squared away, so I would not hesitate to buy another barrel from THEM.
Key term THEM, knowing what I know now about this issue, I would be very reluctant to buy one off the EE.
 
If one were installing a muzzle widget, it's unlikely that the extension would loosen. Undoing it, much more likely.

The other thing is what batch it's from. From what I understand the newer batches had the extensions installed after nitriding, thus eliminating the issue. There may still be 'lots'(?) of barrels from the old batch floating around, and I would imagine that other than the extension coming loose, it would be difficult to figure out which were which.

Odds are if you tightened the extension back on - the gas port will not line back up, nor will the headspace be correct (in all likleyhood).

This is a factory warranty issue IMHO

Kevin is correct, it should be sent bac kto S&J hardware.

As i am the owner of S&J hardware, i can tell all the members here we have not got one text , email or call from you or anyone else i nthe last month about an issue with a barrle.

I had a similar experience with my SL8 and 55gr fmj Winchester white box. I'm not concerned at all as this is just one type of cheap bulk ammo. It wouldn't have even crossed my mind to start a thread on CGN about it as I haven't tried more than one kind of ammo.
 
As others has stated it is known we had an issue, with an old batch of barrles, this fact was made much worse by some mud slinging by some compatition.
Weather you got the product , new or used if you have a problem with any product we make please contact us and we will take care of it.
we have very little to almost no issue with any of the 60 + products we at S&J hardware make, but at times things get missed.
we have allways backed our products 100 %, even when part of the issue is customer error.

It seems that a lot of companies have started drilling the pin into the threads, however, the pin was never intended to lock the extension in place, nor are dowel pins meant to resist force in that manner.

Not that drilling the pin into the barrel is bad...........

I went back to my emails to get a the exact info for badboy regarding my email to him and i mistakingly sent it to another manufacturer!!

Correct it is not designed to lock the extension on, the torque applied to the barrel extension should lock it on. The Pin is just insert slightly into the barrel itself -- however if the extension does come loose the pin will likely be scrap - and if its leaning or canted - odds are the extension is loose.


Simon - good on you for stepping to the mound to fix an issue. Its inspiring to see so many AR manufacturers in Canada these days.
 
Back to my original point,

I was going to test fire the rifle today after i tightened it up but i know for a fact its not tight enough so ill be holding off untill my new barrel arrives and once the S&J barrel is sorted out i will install it and do some more shooting with it....

And yes KevinB Simon and his company is very well respected on my end aswell with their commitment to providing a top notch Canadian manufacturer
