I know this may be off topic a tad, but I figure most milsurp collectors are military history buffs.

Did you guys see last nights episode of Air Aces on the strategic bombing, specifically the Lancasters and the crew of ME669?

Not only was this a beautifully done episode, but the ending. Jeesh! The hairs on the back of my head were standing on end. I had never heard of this story and I was in shock. Even my wife, who is half asleep while she tolerates me watching these shows starting sobbing. These bomber crews had serious BALLS.

If you have not seen it, you should. I won't ruin the ending by telling you what happens. But with men like JACKSON there was no doubt to the outcome of the war. Unstoppable. This is going to be mandatory watching for my nephews this year.

Great episode

The pilot,Fred mifflin, was a Newfoundlander who grew up 20 km from me.
It is a shame none of this stuff is taught in school.Young people have no clue about there own local history!

Incredible episode - so far that is two episodes about Canadian pilots / crews

Air Aces is an outstanding show.

Agreed. I haven't seen many, but I did watch the Douglas Bader and Red Tails episodes completely. Managed to catch the last half of the Lancaster episode after I got home from work today. Goddamn crazy! It's amazing what our soldiers went through, and what they did to ensure their friends made it home alive.

I also caught that episode on history channel today,

what a great episode, true war heroes as well as the rest of the veterans from bomber squadrons.

Incredible bravery displayed by men like Jackson and Mifflin.

Makes me proud to wear the same uniform as those heroes.

All in all great program by history channel and what a great series Air Aces is, highly recommended!!

it was a awesome story with bravery beyond belief, to climb out on the wing with a fire extinguisher to put out a fire while in flight is just amazing .The pilot was from Newfoundland ,when i herd is name Fred Miflin i was wondering if he was in anyway related to st Johns gunsmith Broan Miflin? There is proably a good chance he is

Ask Broan Miflin, I bet he can tell you. I have relatives who did less remarkable things in that war and I certainly know about them.

We are equally lucky over here in UK - the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is based not far from where we live, and we are treated many times during the summer months to the sight and sounds of another Canadian-built Lancaster. There are also serious moves afoot to get another one flying soon, and if anybody is interested, since this is a mite OT, I can PM you with details.
