Why do I feel the need to get a Glock

Okay - this is kind of a range report/assessment of the new Gen4 G22, reporting for the "pro-Glock" side, I suppose...

Just took my brand new Glock 22 out to the range for the first time yesterday. It was amazing, even better than I remembered. The Gen4 trigger is great, and needs no modification at all. This IS supposed to be a service pistol, NOT a bench-rested target pistol. I recalled that the Gen2 I was issued had a sweet trigger once it was worn in some, but this one is worlds better, right out of the box. It is smooth, light, crisp, and absolutely predictable.

By the way, I am no neophyte to pistol shooting - I have been doing so since 1976, and have owned & shot a LOT of pistols over the years.

I do need to adjust the rear sight a smidgen to the right - I had the store replace the stock sights with Trijicons, because that's what my issue gun had, but they didn't zero them when they installed them. They are very close, but with just a tweak they'll be perfect.

I had a buddy with me (pretty much a new guy to handguns), and it was so natural for him that he instinctively shot tight groups with it and right to the point of aim (well, a little left, due to the aforementioned slight sight misalignment). He was very taken with the G22.

NAA (CNG mod, as in post #57, above) is a good friend of mine and, trust me, he knows more about most handguns than most of us will ever know. As far as Glocks are concerned, he is "the pro from Dover". Funny story, back in the day, when he & I were heavily into shooting 1911's (by that time he was a collector & acknowledged expert on 1911's), he came back from the Glock Armorer's course, I asked him about Glocks, as I knew nothing about them. He said that it was a good news/bad news thing. The good news - Glocks were fantastic guns. The bad news - I was going to like them better than 1911's! I was aghast - I LOVE my 1911's - but he was right. The G22,at least, was a winner. My opinion has not changed, although the G22 has - but only for the better.

Is the Glock for everyone? No, of course not, just like one style of shoes are not for everyone. But don't let anyone tell you they are crap - if they do, you can guess what their advice is full of. Maybe they don't personally like them, and that's fine, but their opinion doesn't alter the fact that millions of them are the chosen service pistol for armies, police departments, tactical teams, special forces, etc. all over the world. There is a reason for that (and low price ain't it!). They're reliable, they're accurate, and they're very easy to shoot well.

I suggest you shoot as many different pistols as you can before making your decision. You may hate the ergonomics of the Glock, and love the SIG, or vice versa, or something else entirely. There is no substitute for experience.

Very well said, far and away the best post I have read on here in some time. I am new to pistols in the civilian world and just picked up a Gen 4 G17 which for me has been fantastic and a ton of fun too shoot.

For the win!

Cause glocks are good guns?

They're not my favorite, I still like the sig better if only because I grew up DA/SA. A minor thing against the grip angle; I'm more used to a lesser angle so on presentation I either over compensate and aim towards the floor or under compensate and aim at the sky. Like I said, minor gripe, and one that can be corrected with a lot of practice.

My main distaste for glocks mostly comes from zealots that don't know when to shut up about their pet gun (true for any gun with fanboy's though).

I used to hate Glocks for superficial reasons. But when I was still new to pistol shooting I really struggled with finding a pistol that had it all: reliable, comfortable and shot well. Eventually I decided to at least try a Glock, just to see what all the fuss was about. I hoped on the EE and found a decent priced Gen 3 with some spare mags and gave it a crack. Well, the pistol was definitely reliable, and definitely comfortable, but I couldn't shoot it worth a damn! My groups were a good 8-10" at 25 m. Either way two out of three wasn't bad, and I wasn't exactly a pistol marksman at that stage of my shooting life. So I decided to keep the Glock for the time being and work with it. In the end, I reasoned that the reliability of my Glock was far more important than the grouping size.

I ended up selling that Gen 3 Glock 17 and getting a Gen 4 Glock 17 (for the bigger grip!). Now I have a gun that's still 100% reliable, doesn't need to be cleaned as often or babied at, has magazines that work all the time, is comfortable for me to shoot and digs holes out of the middle of targets (thanks to the Glock trigger forcing me to develop proper shooting techniques). YMMV.

lol ya that's exactly what happens ...every time,.
so iv gotten a 92 fs ,xd 40, 3 different smith and Wesson revolvers, Cimmeron 1873 peacemaker, colt commander 1911, walther p99,and most recently a iwi jerico 941.
every time, I picked up a glock, and opted for something else .and now Im wanting again .
cant figure it out.
U already own one of the best 9mm and thats the Jericho 941

I just put a Hogue Slip on grip and boy what a difference. Feels great in the hands.

Next time the Glock urge gets too strong,go out to the shed and nail two short 2 X 4's together in the shape of a pistol.
Grip the 2 x 4 in your hand and then remember.
The urge will go away.

My original quote is based on a true story..
I owned a G35 and it was a solid accurate pistol
I owned a G34 and I think I liked the G35 better.
I sold those a long time ago.
I got the Glock urge again last year and bought a G17.
After primarily shooting 1911's the last 10 years,I just couldn,t get a thrill from the Glock.
I sold it.
It felt like holding a 2 x 4.
I would say that a 1911 is what I shoot the best.
It is a natural point and shoot pistol for me.
I like the feel,I like the look and I like a nice light, crisp single stage trigger.
There's a lot of guns to shoot out there and if the Glock turns your crank and fullfills a need in your collection, then all the power to you.
They're a super handgun.
Will I get the urge again.
Read my quote.
I'll be heading to the shed with a 2 X 4 and a saw.

You started your pistol career on the right road with the G17 and are now driving in the ditch.:p:p

What is it about Glocks. So much love, so much hate. These threads makes me feel like there's a hormonal imbalance going on in the pistol community. I've been plinking with pistols on and off for nearly 35 years. Owned or at least shot most common platforms, then one day, decided on a Glock. You know what,...I've never held a pistol in my hand that fit my style of grip and stance like it. Nothing.

I watched a well known Glock person shoot theirs on youtube just recently and watching their grip I know now why they swear by them like I do. There are grips and stance that fits 1911's, SIGs, M&Ps and so on, I really prefer the feel of that slab grip. The way I press between the front and back like a vise on that flat front and back grip, allowing me to press that trigger with finger tip straight back through into the center line and a good high purchase for recoil recovery, its the best! 1911s okay, SIGs good, M&Ps good, Glocks.... yummy!

When you take purchase on a pistols grip, and its in your hand like its welded there, then you have a pistol that fits your hand and obviously your grip technique. Pistols are all about grip right. If it is in your hand like a vise you control it, you're not just holding it up. I think the love/hate about Glocks is merely in the grip/the whole grip and nothing but the grip.

Add on the fact the trigger, though much different from anything else, is superb once you accept it and master it by learning its reset. It's always the same old friend, day in day out, no switches or bells or whistles to blow to fire just press and shoot. No 50lb double action first shot. No thumbing for a safety or pressing a grip safety always right especially when changing to the weak hand.

Really, is there anything that comes even close to this design? I'm afraid not.:ninja:There are prettier styles:xes, and sharper looking pistols no doubt:cool:, and some even approaching Glocks in reliability:bsFlag:, but in pure practice in a durable, no BS, accurate, inexpensive platform, right out of the Austrian box, in a league of it's own.
There are more accurate platforms(1911s)for the organized shooting sports in the hands of experienced shooters for sure, but as a great duty pistol, and a general range pistol for a gazillion rounds of fun, its sweet!!!!
Sorry if I laid it on a little thick......*cough*..*cough*......

So tell us........ when you picking up your new G17?............:evil::evil:

.
Great post . Thanks .
but I don't want another 9mm .
thinking I want a 40

Look at it this way, if you want a new handgun, a Glock is one of the lowest priced ones, which means you aren't wasting a ton of money. You have already had one, so you know the quality and capability. The Glock 17 Gen 4 is a nice change, you get all the goodness of your first gun with some new bells and whistles.

Pretty sure the M&P's are taking the market by storm for price. You get a hard case, 3 mags, a speedloader, and some extra bits for somewhere around 600$...
