Parker hale m82-m87-C3-C3A1 Rifles

I've got the C3 barrel specification and have given them out a few times. The correct original length is 26". I have seen 22 and 24" however no confirmation in the offical literature. I'm sure Carl can add to this. Ron

According to C-71-234-000/MA-000 (2001-02-28) the Heavy, full floating C3A1 barrel is:
length 60cm (23.75")
weight 2.04KG(4.5lbs)
grooves 4
pitch 1 turn in 30.48cm(12")
direction right hand

Norma match (168gr) 777m/s(2549 fps)
C21NATO ball (149gr) 840m/s(2750 fps)

According to C-71-234-000/MD-000(5 Oct 76) The (full floating barrel is the heaviest section cold forged (and stress relieved) target barrel available)- C3 barrel is:
length 26"
weigth 4-1/4lbs
grooves 4
pitch 1:12" (5 Oct 76) 1:14 (85-1-31)
direction right hand

US M118 National Match Ball

Read what I posted before about this matter - it's always been clear as mud to us wpns tech's - LOL.

Hope this helps, Carl

What you refer to as the National Defense Manual is actually called a CFTO:

Canadian Forces Technical Order

The C3A1 CFTO is: C-71-234-000/MA-000 - this is the first book

MA - Data summary
MB - Operating instructions
MD - Equipment description
MM - 1st line maintenance instructions
MN - 2nd/3rd line maintenance instructions
MX - Illistrated repair parts manual and scale
MY - Parts identification list

The C3A1 barrels never ever had front sight bracket holes drilled. The rifle was never ever designed with iron sights in mind - period! If you have a barrel with the holes, you have a C3 barrel. The above tech drawing is a mishmash of several diagrams. That is an M87 stock, iron sight C3 style barrel and a Canadian C3A1 action body.

I'll have to scan my C3A1 parts diagrams to give you the true parts look. I don't have a scanner so it might be a while. Maybe I can snap a picture of the page. It doesn't have the screw holes you refer to. Maybe you're looking at a C3 CFTO, which did have the bracket holes.

Also, here's a tidbit of info probably most people won't know unless they were a tech - there were 2 lengths of barrel available - 24 & 26" as well as 3 twist rates 1:10, 1:12, 1:14. This all depended on what nato stock # you used to order.

Don't ask me why it was like this - only the LCMM(Life cycle material manager) can answer that. Most techs I knew were not shooters or collector's either. I happen to be one of the exceptions within the trade.

The overall weight of the rifle with the scope was: 15.875 lbs - say 16 pounds for ease of remembering. The rifles weight is on par with what the M40A3 weighs(17 lbs).

I don't want to sound rude or come off as condesending, so please take this with the spirit with which it is intended;):D - but if you've never worked with this rifle and only have used a book to give an educated guess - please don't offer advice, because you'll only confuse people searching for the correct answers. I'm not the end all answerer to this rifle, I just happen to know what I know from years of using and maintaining this rifle!:D

All the best, Carl

Wade....one of the most complete C3 projects I've seen. Very impressive....let us know how it does on the range.....Ron

Anybody else out there putting one of these together?

Has anyone got pictures of the C3 spotting scope case and Bushnell set up? The CFC manual shows NSN 6650-21-871-6721 manufactured by 538-75. It is described as " Cover. For straight telescope NSN 6650-21-871-6071. Outer shell 10 oz or 12 oz cottonduck over polyethylene foam insert, cotton webbing straps w/ plastic buckles and slide fasteners."

Also are there any good pictures of the C3a1 spotting scope set up?

Nice to see some C3 and C3a1 stuff for sale in EE. Somebody picked up a current McMillan C3a1 stock a couple weeks back. See a C3 drag bag sold last night. Got to wonder what else is squirrelled away.

Ron,

To tell you the truth, those covers weren't used very much at all.

Yes there's pictures of them, but what I saw while I was in was few and far between. If I remember correctly, the covers were produced by the same company that produced our web gear, and they almost seemed like a modified thermos cover when I had one in my hands.

But like I said, I almost never saw any in use in the maintenance depots I was posted in. The weapons shop was usually locted near the FCS(Fire Control Systems) technician shop - they did all optical work.

Cheers, Carl

On the old CTC Sniper course and 80's CFSAC C3 course of fire we used those covers. Had to peel them back at the objective lens, but they did their job. I would have thought surplus scope would come with stand/cover.

These girls will turn a few heads on their stroll. Can you tell us a little about each one?

Sure............In Top Picture

Top - C3 in target configuration 7.62x51. Started life as Parker Hale 1200 TX single shot. Now wearing a C3a1 military stock fitted and "Devcon" bedded and it's dressed out in correct swivels and handstop. C3 has been converted to box mag feed. Bolt has been updated with a rare C3a1 cocking piece and shroud (gas flange cut for safety). Trigger is also C3a1. Proper PH rear sight and C1 sling

Centre - C3 experimental used for testing early in the sniping program in 300Win Mag. Rifle was purchased from John's private collection from Marstar with original Kahles ZF69 scope ( in correct serial # range Nr 15###). It is in a C3a1 stock and is mag feed.Original PH handstop and bipod, original C1 sling

Bottom - C3a1 clone in 7.62x51 built on a Parker Hale M82 action. Bolt and trigger are C3a1 as is the magazine. Barrel is Parker Hale in C3a1 profile 60 cm in length (issue length although others were available).C3a1 military stock fitted and "Devcon" bedded . The rife was fitted with a custom steel 1913 picatinney rail. Night vision scope is a surplus PVS 502 on a C3 base. Original PH handstop, bipod and C1 sling

Many thanks to the people who supplied their knowledge and expertise on these builds....you know who you are !

Next build will be a C3A1 clone in a McMillan stock with proper scope mount and with any luck a Unertyl 10X

Another c3 clone

Just like the other ones I built, she shoots! So far first round hits on chest sized rocks out to 600 yards using a laser range finder for distance, head sized when I

hold her real tight.

I just picked up another C3 stock, so maby one in 300 mag like twincams , but, a little more recoil, then again fewer come ups for the scope, yes I know the scope is not

correct but it dials up and down nicely, and the 10 power is just right for me ! !

I really enjoy shootin, these rifles, when they are tuned up and dialed in and performing as expected ,on to the next project and let someone else have fun.

Cheers Billybob
