Anyone else think economy rifles degrade brand?

There are many many good points made in this thread, whats funny is how some refuse to acknowledge them.

Accuracy is but one small piece of what makes a quality firearm, reliability is much higher on my requirement list. If a bolt rifle isnt as smooth as glass picking up another round when cycling the action at any speed in any conditions while I am under a little stress and not able to do so with utmost attention, I don't want it. Some of these low end rifles have so much slop in the action when the bolt is open, they will bind, I for one think that is unacceptable.

A rifle must also fit me properly, so that when I shoulder it I don't have to search for the sights or my target. A properly fitted rifle will also lessen felt recoil when you are paying enough attention to notice it, like at the range.

A rifle should have a good, reliable, repeatable trigger. Not something that can lock up if bumped by a twig.

A rifle should have a dependable safety that guarantees it cannot be fired.

Etc...etc...

The cost of such a rifle doesn't matter, as long as it meets my needs, it's perfect. I just haven't found those needs met with rifles like the Axis, or any modern Savage for that matter.

I have 2 rifles like that. The first one is a Tikka m-695 with a leupold 3-9x40 in .300WM. Beautiful rifle. The other is a Savage Axis in 22-250 which I have tuned the trigger on ;)

Well, pretty much all my non hunting clothes come from Costco (yes, the $15 jeans), my truck is over 10 years old and I only own one pair of shoes that are "dressy". So yeah, it evens out. :)

You sound like me "splainin' myself"... So your civies come from Costco (alot of mine do too)... but I'm wondering where your huntin' togs come from??? (I avoid that topic around here as much as possible!) ;) :D

Well I would say that most of the new wetherby can't produce better groups than what you just showed .

Are you talking about the target where there's shots all over the page and the person circles the three best ones? If so, I'd have to say that's nonsense. Having owned a few new weatherby's, I can tell you that I haven't had one that didn't shoot sub-MOA and they're guaranteed to, at that.

The rifle pictured isn't even shooting 2 MOA.

Why would a person purchase these junk firearms instead of a rifle in the $800-1,000.00 range? The odds will be against you when the gun is needed the most................may not function properly in cold tempertures, when dirty, manufactures defects, etc. I know the main reason why gun manufactures make these firearms, money, but to purchase them.

Budget maybe???

Here again is the thing, people that are more fortunate than others don't realize that some are less fortunate, and no I don't mean lazy.

Buy a $330.00 scoped rifle and go hunt or sit on the couch and dream about hunting and enjoying your hobby.

Some of us are poor some of us are in the middle and some of us are very well off.

I know it is hard to comprehend that someone doesn't make the 150K a year but there are many walks of life that folks come from.

I am actually a bit surprised at this statement.

Wow, what a piece of work......you must feel proud.

He's from Alberta. Anyone who CAN'T make $150k in Alberta IS lazy, period.

Holy geez, I only asked a question because I was looking for an answer, not to be finger pointed. Why are you surprised at this statement?..........geez! Moreover, I grew-up poor and in 1977 I purchased my first rifle, a Browning BDL. How could a poor guy afford such a nice gun back then? Simple, I was always my own man and wasen't influenced by others (ie didn't, smoke, drink, party, take illegal drugs, gamble or cheat on my wife and today I'm my own man, not influenced by sinful acts, that's how I can afford quality firearms. Moreover, I love hunting and it comes from my heart and not "just" some thing to do like todays generation.

Talkin bout my target????lol

That is easily explained if you ask. ;)

Yes budget for a small percentage from what I see. Hunting and shooting today is an expensive sport no matter how one looks at it.
So those involved for the most part earn a fair living it is where they decide to spend their money is the real reason why some make the decisions they do. I look just at the small circle within my group. I am the only one forced to retire 15 years early due to health and on a fixed income of 40% what the rest make but I am also the one still buying the best quality I can afford and always picked on during hunting trips about what new gun did I take this time and it must be nice.
No I see a gun I want and then work out a plan how I am going to get the cash. Is there something I can sell etc. Many times I have to save a year but I do.
I don't drive 60,000 trucks, go south two times a year or pay golf dues at three clubs like my buds however. If one would just stop smoking for 12 months he could buy what ever nice rifle he wants .
So to me it is all about choices and the priorities we have as individuals and nothing wrong with that but please stop the crying about what others like to shoot in high end guns most are not snobs just gun owners that worked hard to get what they have and enjoy shooting fine guns. With me also it is about the return on the investment someday.

That what I guess I was trying to get across, it is choices not budget. My truck took 150$ In fuel last week. Chances are if all your budget allows is a 300 gun you likely can't afford the tags, ammo, fuel either and it is not the sport for you. I don't want to sound like a #### but case in point a friend of mine who can't seem to get up for work everyday finds himself looking for work regularly, always mooching ammo, guns, money and still keeps himself smoking and drinking regularly. Always saying how jealous he is about all the breaks in life I have got and all the nice firearms I have. Interesting while he sleeps in from the night before I am at work. Again choices.

Well, that was quite a read!! 20 pages of banter, some not too nice, some very level headed,
These less-expensive rifles fill a niche, and are usually quite practical.

I like quality firearms, and if I am looking for a specific item, I may well have it built by a good 'smith.
This is often pricey, but gets me exactly what I want.

On the flipside, I own and shoot: Weatherby Vanguards, Factory M700's, a Savage 114, 2 Savage 11's, A T/C Venture, M77's, and M70's.
Quite the mixture, I realize.

The only thing I will not tolerate is an inaccurate rifle. I must be able to depend on the first shot going exactly where it should.
Follow up shots are seldom needed, but if one is, I also want to know where it will go, so to hunt, 3 shot groups get the nod from me.

I don't need to use budget rifles, but am always curious as to what is being offered for the dollar spent.
Some of these have amazed me, some, not so much.

What a person chooses should be up to them. A poor choice will quickly become apparent.
We do need more people in shooting sports and hunting, so If the budget rifle is the route, I say more power to them.

Regards, Eagleye.

I think what some are saying here, is that your heart is in the right place track for the most part.
Sometimes how you communicate your opinion to others and your personal delivery sometimes lack diplomacy somewhat.
I myself am often mea maxima culpa of this.

perhaps

I have a few rifles of varying values and they all kill game the same way......."DEAD"!!As a matter of fact,i bought a Ruger American in .243 this past fall (out of curiosity) and it will shoot as good or better than guns costing 2-3 times it's value. It is probably one of the most accurate rifles ruger has ever put out. These economy rifles just expose the others as the overpriced eye candy that they are.

I've been hunting since I was 8 yrs old....I'll be 47 this summer. My gun safes have quite a few rifles.....TC, Remington, Savage, Ruger, H&R, Marlin and a motley crew of .22 Cooey's. But when coyote hunting season comes around....it's not my gorgeous although aged Remington 700 Deluxe .222 that comes out, it's my winter camo'd Savage Axis .223 that I purchased last winter that I drag to the fields and clear cuts. I pick the Savage not because it's inexpensive, but because it's proved to me that it's accurate and dependable.

I think that the posters on this thread who have leaned toward the "elitist" side, really haven't "evolved" as hunters. I've long recognized that well made and inexpensive can certainly go together in the same sentence. Those that don't believe so still have a long learning curve ahead.

You may want to change up your bait or try a slightly different presentation. My suggestion would be to post your 5 pictures of Coopers and "big whitetail", that is sure to make some feel inadequate, it's a little more subtle but it's certain to make some feel inadequate and is likely to solicit the reaction you're trying for...:jerkit:

Well, what is coming across is that you should be the one hunting because you have the money to buy new and fancy rigs and that you and your income bracket sit in a different group than people that use economy equipment.

Someone had to say it.

It may not be what you are trying to convey but every time you type it sure comes across as such.

I'll make sure that the people making less than you are made aware of the fact that they shouldn't be hunting or enjoying a hobby if they have to purchase low end rifles.

I am glad that your truck is using $150.00 in a week , good for you , I am so proud that you can spend that kind of money you must be doing so well for yourself!!! Make ya feel better? ;)

NOW , don't get poop behind your ears as you extract your head!!Oh wait, shouldn't be too hard being so narrow minded. :)

My 200 dollar enfield sporter will work everytime. It was meant for that. It has taken every game animal on the planet. When your Cooper is frozen solid, my Enfield will work. Just ask the Canadian Rangers. Spending more money does not mean something is better. Fancier, Prettier maybe...but no better. I once watched my Father-in-law take a 22 point bull moose with his scoped 1907 Enfield sporter. Guess what.... the moose died. Now believe me I own a few high end guitars. (Gibsons etc.) that is where paying a little extra counts. Not with a bullet hose.
