so far the only US built ak i like is the one my friend made but i have not got my hands on meny yet

Prior to Sandy Hook, there was talk about doing away with the bulk of the prohibited classification category as a cost saving measure. The result would be lumping all semi-auto firearms on that list into the restricted category, with full autos remaining unobtainium. Of course, that talk faded away pretty quick after Sandy Hook. That said, the recomendation was given to Harper and is still out there; it has yet to be withdrawn by the government's firearms advisory committee.

However, the firearms advisory committee was given a shake up a couple months back, so we'll see if the new one comes out with the same recomendations.

Everything in the restricted category would be A-okay with me. It would really open up the gun market up here in Canada.

I would love to see an AK one day, let alone own one. It will remain a dream......for now! I'm glad to see this subject coming up here and there. It means we haven't given up.

make firend with people in the US almost everyone i know there is a gun owner and 3 of them have more then one ak you can also rent them at some ranges there those ones tend to have fun switchs

As a former AK owner, shooter and guy who carried one in the bush legally - all I can say is "Meh, VZ's a better rifle"

The AK series are of significant historical interest. As such they have major collector appeal. That has been squelched in this country.
Most of the current appeal of the AK is that it is forbidden fruit.
As a firearm, they are what they are. I used to carry a folding stocked CA AKM in the box under the seat of my snowmobile. Good "if you ever need a rifle its there" gun.
Compared to a lot of other rifles, they leave quite a bit to be desired, from the standpoint of accuracy, ergonomics.

ergonomics lol your using it wrong you have to have eastern mindset to love ak like the safety/selector switch on real guns go's from safe to full to semi this was made so that in the heat of battel a panicking slaps the selector down into semi he uses his ammo more wisely and has to think about putting it into full. many people also complain about sharp parts eastern answer to that toughen up. accuracy sure its not the most accurate but it is something ment for battle not for winning sharp shooting events i rather have reliablity over one hole accuracy anyday i sure love playing with them down south and even got to play with a full auto

i love the platform and use it with the right mindset eastern bloc guns are not used the same way as our guns they are not trained they way we are trained that said i'll take the VZ/CZ over nothing it can be moded a bit with the right mag release and i plan to do just that

Ergonomics on the Kalashnikovs are actually good. Some can be quite accurate. As far as automatic capability goes, if our civilian police can have it then so should other civilians. The rifles function well even when treated badly. They would be good for our Canadian Rangers.

It would be a great platform for the rugged north Canadian arctic. Instead the we give them Lee Enfield rifles, which are great rifles, but the technology is just too far behind. The AK is as reliable and has enough firepower, so I agree completely.

The AK selector/safety is awkward and typically quite noisy, and has gotten more than a few people killed, and while I find the AK mag release excellent, rock-and-lock reloading sucks, especially with deeply curved mags.

However the Vz58 is hardly better in those aspects, nor are a lot of other military rifles that didn't get picked apart by NATO propaganda.
