Hey all,
Just a quick question. I'm looking for an optic for an AR that will get me out to 250-300 yards.
I'm fishing for sub $300, however I don't mind spending more for great quality.
That said, I'm a new shooter and I really just want to be able to hit the paper!!!
I have looked at a bunch of websites, but its tuff to get an idea of what's out there. I guess I'm really just looking for a solid starting point.
Oh! And if you have any pics of a great optic mounted I would love to see it!

Thanks!

My vote would be the Vortex Strikefire. $200.00, and you get the sight, a doubler that threads on, dust caps, and a riser. I have one on my AR, and am buying a second.

*I’m just a stand and shoot paper AR owner*

For shooting out to 250-300 yards I think you would need/want proper magnification and the Strikefire just ain't gonna give you that. Here's an option but you should probably save up for something with more magnification.

At 200-300 yards you can look for something around 4X magnification and it will be enough. We shoot up to 500 meters with 3.4... ;)

I have a Millet DMS 1-4x on my AR right now and like it quite a bit, it's right around $300.

The Hi-lux CMR is a good 1-4X illuminated scope @ $425 CAD

Close to the Viper PST 1-4X but less expensive.

So i was listening to a podcast today and they were talking about barrel lengths of ar's. it was mentioned that an 11" was great for 3 gun comps because you rarely shoot out past 50 yards.
The AR im looking at has a 14.5" barrel. Is it reasonable to assume 200-300 yards is not to much for that length?

It should be more than capable, I think 14.5 is reasonably good up to 500?

14.5" will cut it at 300 given you do your part and quite well... Anything further you would want to look at 16" or more (usually for service rifle matches out to 600) also keep in mind when selecting optics if you go with a red dot, u will want to choose based off red dot size. Some are 2moa others 4 ect...the Further you move out the smaller the targets get and the bigger your dot. I suspect with a shorty AR the combination of the two will make things a bit more sporty.

Thanks Guys! Thats all good info!
The club i am looking to join has a maximum rifle range length of 200 yards, so i want to be set up for at least 300. Thats my usual approach to these sort of things. That being said, having a relatively inexpensive red dot for closer stuff is also quite appealing... Damn video games got me all riled up!
