Deer killing gun...sks?

The SKS is a fine deer gun inside 150 meters. Go for it!

Cheers
Jay

I wish I legally could... we have a serious urban deer problem in Cranbrook and area.. when I mow my lawn.. the bag has more deer sh*t in it then grass... My cedar trees are naked for the 1st 10 feet from the ground.. and they attack people in the spring...... There are so many herds of deer in town that have never seen the forest... completely fearless as they have no predators.... Giant Rats

Really? From what I've read the 7.62x39 has a very slight advantage over the 30-30win.

Have a look at hodgdon .com load data centre. The commie advantage was spitzer bullets for flatter trajectory, the Hornady FTX takes care of that issue very well and sends a 160gr bullet at 125 gr commie velocities.

Ahh. The info I was reading predated the FTX Leverevolution stuff. It was comparing the 160RNFP to the 125spz. And at close range the Win had the commie beat, but at yardage the commie passed the win.
Dated info.

I'm sure the commie round is adequate for deer no doubt, but ballistically it makes the 30-30 look like a magnum.

Until you start going the distance. You can easily hit a target at 200 yards with an SKS or Win94, you just can't place shots that well. It's possible to hit a 12inch x 12inch plate about half the time I find, with either rifle. Once you pass 100 yards the spire point really starts to make a difference and the 30-30 becomes the dominant alien slave race forever destined to live in a fudd's closet, the one he keeps the crusty hunting boots in.

If the 7.62x39 was that inferior of a round, why are there so many Rugger mini 30 deer rifles?
Must be good enough to get the job done. Now perhaps the mini30 is more acurate than an SKS.....but if you can shoot your gun well that's what would seem to count.

"...same ballistics..." Expect for the much lighter bullet.
"...how inaccurate the sks..." Right. The SKS wasn't made for great accuracy. However, if it'll consistently shoot 3"ish groups with hunting ammo(SP's) at 100 yards or so, it'll do nicely. Think in terms of hand loading or trying a few brands of ammo at 100.

Plenty of people using these for so called brush guns. There seems to be a decent supply of soft point hunting ammo out there for them as well. The two I have would be perfectly fine to use as a deer gun, if yours will shoot well with hunting ammo then go nuts. I just happen to prefer a bolt action for hunting. Bullet weight and velocity is more than adequate to put one through the boiler room of a whitetail. Happy hunting!

I think an Sks would be fine for deer at a range upto 150yds with te right hunting ammo. The real question is, why would u want to lug the beast of an Sks with you into the bush. That gun is HEAVY in my opinion. Lol

My friend read a book about a man eating Siberian tiger who was taking his toll on the human population in one of the Far east former soviet republics. It seems that the Soviet version of gun control was evening up the odds between the hunters & the hunted. The hunters were using crude improvised fowling pieces etc which were Ill - eagle. The local constabulary eventually got the order to hunt down the miscreant Tiger. They all had ordinary SKS rifles, probably with ordinary steel core M43 ammunition. The guy who eventually killed the tiger got off every shot he could (charging tigers can cover a lot of ground between shots from a semi-auto rifle apparently.) His SKS was trashed, the butt was sticking out of the tiger's mouth the muzzle was in his guts somewhere, but the Tiger was dead.

Elmer Kieth has a similar story with a camera, his .45 SAA, & a cougar.

The SKS is a bit on the heavy side, but very rugged. If you get one of the chinese phenolic stocks, it will be all but indestructable.

you need some spinach son ! You could also just put the sling on.

i watched a show a while back it had these native looking guys shooting caribou with sks in siberia. It didnt say anything about range but it was in dense woods so I dont imagine it was that far but shows that people who need an absolute "survival/food gun" can and do depend on the sks

I saw that too! It was about the Evenki people of Ulun Yok, Siberia, Mongolia and China. They hunted, bred and domesticated reindeer, and yea, I saw an SKS being used there too. They use the fur for coats, sleeping bags, tents good for -70 degrees!

They make sewing needles from bone, thread from deer tendons. They have a virtually bloodless killing/skinning process...I mean, you get good at something you do daily for 40,000 years (no exageration there). They can't call 911 for ambulances or police response...and in recent years they trust their lives, their tribe's existence, to the SKS, along with their knowledge and skills.

Those people were among the various tribes that set up, as the early humanoids treked from African subcontinent through Asia and then onto the Americas. That's why I mention 40k years.
