Help requested in locating stolen bolts

Good advice from everyone, thank you.

Just to answer an earlier post, I store the bolts separately to make more efficient use of the gun safe and as an added security measure incase someone were to try to steal the rifles. This way, no active firearms would be taken taken and be "loose" on the streets.

Thunder Bay is a small city and I have a feeling the bolts were likely dumped on the side of the road. We just had a snow storm come through, the heaviest being on the night that I came home to discover the break in so my attempts at searching around the area were fruitless. I have contacted the local pawn shops and I will be filing a police report tomorrow. The local gun shops are also keeping an open ear and they have been informed incase the thief tries to sell the bolts to them. I will use the advice provided earlier and list the serial numbers and some photos of the bolts and pass them along to the police, gun shops, and metal scrap yards just incase something turns up. I shudder to think the bolts are in some snow bank down the street.

I will post back here when I have some updates.

Maybe htey left them in the tool box which could provide some measure of protection?

Going to make the assumption that they ASSUMED the tool box had either A) Pistols or B)valuable parts/tools. Really sorry to hear buddy and I hope they come by the shop wanting to sell them off. It'll be hard for me to not clock them from across the counter if they do... Those are some more 'Unique' bolts so I should be justified... Right? heh.

Seriously though, I really hope you find them. This is really sad stuff.

I am so angry right now, I want to drive to Thunderbay and help the police find those G*dD*mn thieving bast*ards!!!!!

Nabs, I feel for you right now, especially since one of those bolts once belonged to a fine rifle that I sold you.

Guys, if you spot any "Mauser bolts" for sale on ANY gun forum, play dumb and ask the seller a few questons first... they might be the culprits. Though I suspect those A-hole morons would be too stupid to figure out how to sell anything.

Here's one of Nabs' bolts, off an 1891 Ludwig Loewe (1888 German Commission rifle):

These photos help explain why Nabs is so heartbroken:

Guys, it is interesting to note that my Flickr account got an unusally high amount of interest in Gew88 bolts yesterday!!!!!! What are the odds? I will be contacting Flickr to see if I can get the origin of the views traced! More to come!!!

Photos of such bolts are extremely rare, and my photos are commonly found on search engines.

No leads yet.

I did have two Gewehr 88 bolts locked in the safe as they were going to be cleaned. I tested one of them out in my Gewehr 88s that lost their bolts and the bolt works perfectly. When I able to hand load again, it should be a good match.

I figure I will save up some money for some replacement bolts in the mean time.

Kurgan, fortunately, the Loewe I bought from you was not violated. However, one of her sister rifles from the same year had a different experience. She doesn't quite like the extra bolt I have but it does work so I can still enjoy her. She does have one of the nicest triggers I have encountered on a Gewehr 88 and German military rifles in general that I have used. The bolts that were taken for my Gewehr 88s are almost identical to the pictures that Kurgan posted.

I am hoping the culprit tries to sell the bolts to a gunshop in my area as they have been warned. It isn't worth their time selling to a scrap metal dealer as the bolts would worth $5-$10. The one scenario I do not wish for is that the bolts were dumped. Fingers crossed something comes of this unhappy scenario.

To be honest, I was thinking of stopping my collection as this experience was a little more heart wrenching then I would have liked. I recently held some of my rifles that lost their bolts, the first time since the incident, and some of them fired up that love and admiration I have for these relics of history. I will certainly take greater steps to protect them in the future as I have learned many valuable, though costly, lessons from this.

Is that the 88 I am thinking of? I don't recall if that one had a matching bolt or not...

If they find out that the box contains bolts and not cash or whatever they may just dump the bolts in the trash or on the street. My truck was broken into recently and my wallet stolen. I found it down the street with the contents spread all over.

It's time to bring in a Famous Psychic and Tarot Card reader to find your missing bolts. Give Anti Gun Oprah a call and she might have you on the show...don't tell her what's in the box.

The Gew 88s bolts were a mix of all German and Czechs, none of them matched the rifles. A real shame is losing the Kar 88 bolt as it matched. I can use a Gew 88 bolt and still enjoy her though.

Good point- I once had some music gear stolen from my car, and found it a week later in the bushes in the vacant lot next door. I figure it was kids who stole it, and then panicked and dumped it. Take a look around the immediate area.

Quite a bit of snow still covers the area but I did have a look during a respite and I did not find anything. I'll have another look when the snow finally goes away.

I hope you can find them. I wouldn't be surprised if they are found within a small radius of your home. They are heavy and the criminal would want too know ASAP what he had inside and if it was worth carrying. And if not ditch them.
