Shorten PAL Approval Times

Your application is missing some information. They usually send a letter when they get around to it asking for whatever is missing. Save yourself some time and give them a call.

What I did was send my application in without the test results... I'm still waiting on the results and hoping to receive them any day now. After I get my results I'll fax them in.. Hope this wont cause any further delays.

Hehe, here is my timeline so far:

March 2/3: Completed course
Application Sent: March 19
Application Received: March 21
Received Stamped Results: April 15
Faxed Results: April 16
Called in April 23: Was told it is approved and will be printed and mailed this week. Yaaay!

Has anyone had any success from visiting the local CFO's office? I'm currently around 50 days in since they received my application and seriously considering paying them a visit.

Congrats- I did my course March 9th / 10th and haven't seen my results yet. This is the only thing holding up the process. The application is in process, they are just waiting for the results. Was told that I can't do the interview or have my ref's do theirs until they get those results. How hard is it to review a test that was done by a registered instructor and mail it back? Was told last week that they were around a 4 week turn around. The instructor mailed them in on the 12th.....I'm really hoping this week I get those!

Keep calling them! And don't believe that status site LOL. My application status did not change to issued until 3 hours after I made the previous post.

I thought I would add my experiences for anyone that is reading this far along the thread.

I mailed my application in with the results of my PAL and RPAL (did both but different days, sent both results just in case). I sent it registered mail and I waited about a week after it arrived to give them a call. I tend to be extremely polite on the phone and I was fortunate enough to get a very nice sounding woman on the other end. We had a good talk and she explained that they are currently working on a 4 - 5 week wait from the day to application is dropped in the box to the day it shows up online. She did check to see if it had been received for me, (I knew it had, sent it registered) and said it was there but hadn't been looked at yet.

So my experiences with the Firearms people thus far are 1 for 1 for excellent interactions. I will give it until the end of next week, if it hasn't been updated, I'll make another call. I'll will also follow up in this thread if people are interested.

Here is my experiences:

Feb 23rd, Took BOTH Pal and RPAL, same day. Was given test results by the instructor immediately.
March 1st, sent entire application plus results by registered mail.
Received (and signed for) March 7th.
Showed up online March 17 I think
March 26, RCMP site showed it had begun processing.
April 17th, both my references got called. I've had my phone off b/c I'm in Maui.
April 24th (today) I checked my VM and they left a message.
So I called, spoke to very nice lady. Did the interview, answered the questions.
And as soon as I said the final "No" (I think it was the 'depression' question), SHE SAID OKAY< you passed.
Then I immediately went online to the Status page, and it's already updated. Application has been processed and License has been Issued. Also, it will be in my hands in 2 weeks AT MOST.

How come some applications are approved and issued on the phone and others must be sent to the CFO for final approval. Does this changes depending on the province?

Wow, I just called and they haven't even approved my results yet. They said they are working on the exams from the week of March 23rd right now, which I am in.
Already been a month waiting, probably another 2 weeks at least.

That's how it should be. This whole business of the instructor sending it to the CFO for them to stamp and send back to the student is ridiculous. They should just do it like every other govt dept (T4's, etc) instructor gives student a copy and sends a copy to CFO. Student sends in PAL app with his copy, then CFO matches up with copy rec'd from instructor. End of story.

Thats not good... I did my course the same weekend as you. I called them this week and they said I should be getting it soon, they didn't specify when exactly.. Not sure who to really believe.

I spoke directly to Deb, she is from the Firearms Educational department who handles the approving.

I believe that is how it is in BC. I was given 2 copies from my instructor. One original and one copy. Instructor said to send original in with App and keep the copy for my records. Was told that when they get my App they match up the original with the copy they get from him. No mention of me needing to wait or fax any approved copy.

Amen to that!
Each province seems to have different ways to do things. Ontario sucks balls.

Yep that's how it was in Alberta. PM me if you want a terrific instructor. And thankfully he signs off in BLUE pen, so it's easy to tell the original. Anything to make this process better and more seamless for the RCMP is a good think IMHO.
And as an aside, I do believe studying beforehand was significant in scoring 100%, which might have helped in the whole process. I won't know for sure, but didnt want to leave anything to chance.

Wait, really? waiting for your tests to be mailed across the country 6 times? That's ridiculous.

The class I took mine with had them all marked on the spot by the instructor, then completed and handed over to us (along with an application form) once we passed our practicals. 1st Shot Firearms training in Winnipeg, if you're curious. $80 each, one day per course (PAL/RPAL), includes pizza and soda for lunch.

I am currently living in AB and challenged my RPAL March 11/13 (Upgrade from PAL TO RPAL). Waited a week after Canada post tracking said it was signed for. Tried the short cut that is in post # 1 and phoned in to check STATUS. This did not work for me as well, just got told to phone back a week later because my app was not at "initial processing" and gave to the normal processing time speech . I did send my app and course grade sheet together and sent it priority Canada post. So total time line 1)March 11/13 app and course grade sheet mailed 2) received by CFC and signed for Mar 15/13. 3) Updated to Initial processing Mar 29/13, called that day but was told it was started but not in the system yet? also told to call back a week later..Gave them till Apr 17/13 with no movement so I phoned again. 4) I was entered it the system waiting for my references to be called and the nice CFC lady patched me through to the Interview department. I completed my interview and had my references call in with my app#. I was contacted by my 2nd reference that he had completed his interview. 5) Logged into CFC 1/2 hr after my last reference was checked and my status was updated too. 6) "Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canada Firearms Centre Toll Free number. (1-800 731-4000)" SWEET.!!! 7) So Apr 17/13 all was completed, it is now Apr 24/13, thats a total of 23 working days in CFC hands. I am still waiting for it to come Canada post snail mail..not so SWEET. So in all if you have nothing wrong with your past criminal history or references, there time lines are acceptable if you keep and eye or two on it and push it along. If you are one of those persons whom sits back and waits for it to happen or said yes or got caught lying on one of the personal questions this would only extend your times or give them reason to delay you until further investigation. So be truthful, give good references and keep track of it and its not that bad. I am a LEO and got no special treatment, just did my part to help them do thier part..... SHARPY

Great mail yesterday! Got my license in my hands.

My time line ( Ont )

Feb 18-19 Classes
Feb 25. Mailed App
Feb 27. App received ( signed for )
March 19. App online

April 5. Did my interview
April 10. 1st reference did their int
April 17. 2nd reference did their int

Not to bad I'd say. If my reference interviews were done sooner it would have shaved some time. Not complaining though. :)
