Just went through several references on small arms, current and historic, and read that there was no confusion in the minds of designers and manufacturers regarding the nomenclature of "clips" and "magazines" for rifles or pistols. "Clips" were intended to load "magazines", whether detached or integral in the firearm.
When the M1 Garand was adopted by US, they had been loading the magazines of Springfield '03's with 5 rd stripper clips and magazines for 1911's for decades and were quite clear that they were loading their M1's with an 8 rd "enbloc clip", unique to the design.
Confusing the two is like referring to cartridges as "bullets", the stuff of ill-informed media types, not what you'd expect to hear on a firearms forum.
