Hi, I was wondering I know your suppose to keep and store a firearm unloaded but are you allowed to store a magazine beside the firearm with the magazine loaded? Or is that against the rules?

Hi, yes i know about this "Unload and lock your firearms!

Store the ammunition separately or lock it up. It can be stored in the same locked container as the firearms."

However what I am wondering is if we can have the magazine loaded as long as its in the same container as the firearm but the magazine not in the firearm?

Thanks!

Hi, yes its only the magazine that is loaded the magazine is NOT in the firearm but stored in the same container. Just want to make sure this is ok to do.

Hi, thanks for the reply :) Just wanted to double check to make sure everything is safe and legal thanks!

It also depends somewhat on the classification of the firearm, as there is an exception for non-restricted firearms in a remote wilderness area. The rules are a little less restrictive for people in remote areas using their firearms for predator control/defense.

Why would you want to store a loaded mag? I store all mags (empty) with the guns and ammo all locked up. I can't see any advantage in storing the mags loaded.

See, I'm the opposite. All my mags are loaded and ready to go all the time. My 1911 mags are stuffed full of ammo sitting beside the unlocked 1911 on the same shelf in the safe. Saves time when I want/need to shoot. takes up less space in the range bag, no need to bring ammo boxes and empty mags when the mags hold the ammo as well as the boxes did. My varmint rifle is in a padded soft case with loaded mags in the outside zippered compartment in the back seat of my truck 24/7. There is also a shotgun in the bedroom with a trigger lock on it and a few shells in my nightstand it leans against.

I load my mags before I go to the range I just don't leave them loaded in the locker. If I lived in a neighborhood where I needed to sleep next to a shotgun and shells I would move. Each to their own I suppose.

If you don't use the magazines very much, the springs will eventually weaken if kept loaded, so be aware :)

My understanding is yes BUT only of the firearm and mag is stored in a safe. And by safe, they mean safe, not a Stack-on cabinet.

Storing Firearms Safely

Unload and lock your firearms!

Store the ammunition separately or lock it up. It can be stored in the same locked container as the firearms.

Non-restricted firearms

Attach a secure locking device, such as a trigger lock or cable lock (or remove the bolt) so the firearms cannot be fired; OR Lock the firearms in a cabinet, container or room that is difficult to break into.

Restricted and prohibited firearms

Attach a secure locking device so the firearms cannot be fired and lock them in a cabinet, container or room that is difficult to break into; or Lock the firearms in a vault, safe or room that was built or modified specifically to store firearms safely.

For automatic firearms, also remove the bolts or bolt carriers (if removable) and lock them in a separate room that is difficult to break into.

That was taken off of the RCMP website. It doesnt say GUN SAFE. It says cabinet, container or room. The stack-on cabinets are fine and legal. I got my information from the RCMP, where did you get yours?

Not quite true, the spring can be stored in either the compressed or uncompressed state with no deterioration of the spring. The spring deteriorates during compression/decompression only.

These was no mention of "need". I was simply replying to your ramble questioning "why" the OP wanted to store his mags loaded. Who cares why, he was asking if he can legally, he wasn't seeking your permission and who cares if you can't see an advantage to it or not, it's not your concern.

This is the problem with people, they think that, "nothing will ever happen in my great neighborhood." anything can happen anywhere and just because a somebody thinks ahead doesn't mean they live in a bad place. In the area that I live there has not beena killing in the last 100 years, doesn't mean it can't or won't happen.

I got my information from the same place.. You need to simplify it for the "Les incompétents". Also it was the 2nd post...

What it's saying:
For Restricted Firearms;
"Attach a secure locking device so the firearms cannot be fired and lock them in a cabinet, container or room that is difficult to break into". (This is what you are stating, But there is more.)
OR
"Lock the firearms in a vault, safe or room that was built or modified specifically to store firearms safely".
No need to do both.

Soo... You CAN put a restricted firearm in a safe, unlocked, with a loaded mag beside the unlocked firearm as long as it's in a: SAFE, VAULT, or Room built specifically to store firearms.

Does that help clarify it?
