May Purchases

I think it's time to kick off this months Purchases thread.
For your consideration a L42A1. She started as a 1943 BSA that was converted by H&H to No.4(T) sniper configuration then to L42 at Enfield in 1971.

Here's the serial number barcode on the end of the chest:

With thanks to Milsurps.com member Simon I know:

Rifle No AV3640 was part of batch number 48 which consisted of 40 weapons and has a recorded conversion date of 30th December 1971. on completion it was shipped to store at Donnington.
Cheers,
Simon.

On the other end of the chest a shipping label. Interesting its #44 of 209. Were all 209 pieces L42's? How many other shipments went out? Interesting.

Which corresponds with the unit markings on the outside of the chest and on the butt stock:

With a little push in the right direction from Peter Laidler and a bit of time using Google I learned the rifle was formerly on issue with 1st Battalion, 52nd Lowland Volunteers, D (Cameronians) Company at Hamilton. Interestingly D Coy. was disbanded April 1 1992 at about the time the L42 was being retired from service.
As with so many of these rifles it's missing most of its accessories so I guess my new grail quest will be to fill all the little slots.

Well nothing as sweet or fancy as the post above ...
I picked up a parker hale 5A which is now sitting on my Mk3 .22

and finally found a peep sight to restore my Cooey M82 to its former glory .
IMG_1820.jpg

peep sight are like busses , i eventualy found one in Australia for the cooey
then one showed up on ebay , then i found another at the Red deer Gunshow
same guy who i bought the 5A from !!! was also tripping over cooey m82s there too , 4 in all
from $225-$300 oddly enough the one that did have the peep was the cheapest

I just picked up a 1943 SVT 40 at TSE in Calgary for $300 + tax ($315 total). They still had 5 left.

It's a Tula, as indicated by the star on the receiver in front of the black bolt.

It IS a refurb, and has an interesting mark on the receiver. At first glance, it looks like the mark for an SVT38 converted to a SVT40, BUT, there is another mark on top of the square that looks kind of like a dunce cap or traffic cone. Does anyone know what this is??

The wood stock looks in OK shape, and the action seems to function well. I AM impressed with that trigger!! Much, MUCH better than either my SKS or 1939 Mosin-Nagant. The SVT's trigger has very little takeup and a clean break - not mushy at all. Almost like a hunting rifle trigger instead of a typical military trigger.

It has the 12 port muzzle brake, and a non-matching magazine. I'm also impressed by just how EASY it is to load that magazine with the typical Mosin-Nagant charger. Again, much easier than charging the magazine on my 39 Mosin. The rounds just seem to slip off the charger into the magazine. Wow.

TSE does an incredible job removing the cosmoline these things come shipped in. The bore is a little dark, but nothing a good cleaning won't cure. All in all, she seems to be a good rifle at a great price. Can't wait to get her out to the range and run some rounds through her!

Ok, for some dumb reason (most likely ME lol) this photo will not rotate right side up. The marking I'm referring to is the sqaure box with the dunce cap on it, that's underneath the 43 of the year. Can anyone tell me what this means??

I bought a nice Finnish M-24. Bolt matches barrel, non SA marked (?) Bore is good, a little dark but there is some shine. Can"t wait to shoot it!

I have been eyeing this beauty for over 20 years! It is an 1861 Snider conversion DC.
The repro sling is a bit tacky but the stock is even nicer than any of the pics show.
