So who has one here on the Forum? Who reloads for one? What's the consensus on reloading Barnes Tsx or TTSX for one? Any info on the rifle, or reloading for one would be appreciated. Just bought one. Any info on where a person could buy a spare magazine for it.

Thanks, Moosinaround

I just bought one on cgn, has a split stock and it hasn't been easy finding a replacement.

numrich (sp?) has magazines, and I've seen some on ebay as well.

i'm a lefty and won't be using this rifle, I bought it for my son who will be hunting for the first time this year.

they're a nice little rifle, in my opinion.

As I have told capercanuck, I too bought a Savage 340, which came with a cracked stock!
I decided to epoxy the crack, then redo the stock. Oh, the stock looks nice now.
But there is a hitch. About a month elapsed from when I started working on it, until it was finished and ready to put together. In the meantime, to save puting the barrelled action in the gun lock up, I just took the bolt out of the Savage and put it someplace out of sight. In fact, it is hid so well that I can't find it!
Several weeks have gone by and no bolt.
I planned on reloading and shooting it. Many years ago I had a bolt action 30-06 Savage which was the spitting image of the 340. The action didn't look all that strong, but it held heavy hand loads. I am puting a side mounted scope on it, so I was looking forward to what it could do, accuracy wise. I certainly wouldn't use premium bullets in a 30-30. For general plinking and targets, I would use 150 grain pointed, something like Remington Core Locke ? If it would ever be used for hunting big game, like moose, I would use standard 170 grain flat nose bullets designed for a 30-30, with maybe a bit more tobassco sauce in them, than is normally used in a 30-30.
Something else I would not do is waste components by "working up," the loads for it. I would simply use one of the well known 30-30 loads and start out at the load I would be using.
Where the bolt went missing is in the basement, where my loading takes place, and is home for tools, guns and much outdoor stuff, etc.
It is also where the cat sleeps at night and I think she must have found my bolt and re hid it! Damn cat won't admit it.

I wouldn't expect much expansion from a TSX or TTSX at 30-30 velocities unless it's the one made for the 30-30. They make a 150gr flat noe that might expand at lower velocities.

IIRC Barnes says their 150 TSX will open at 1400 FPS.
So withing the average 100 to 200 yard range of 30/30 use you should be fine.

I'd be tempted to go with the 130 grain spitzers given you aren't using a tube mag.

I had big ideas about working up a load of spire points in my 340a 30-30. Only one problem. The mag is very short. So you end up seating the bullet farther in just to fit it in the mag. So you end up with more pressure and less velocity. This was using Speers BTSP 150gr and I could get just over 2100 fps out of it. In hind site I would have bought a much lighter grain bullet and tried to get it in the 2400fps range or just go with the standard round nose bullet. I think the ttsx would be a no go as they are so long.

I did put a lot of work into refinishing it and I would like to hunt with it one day. For now I just take it out to the range and blast away with it. It's my only rifle with iron sights.
