As I have told capercanuck, I too bought a Savage 340, which came with a cracked stock!
I decided to epoxy the crack, then redo the stock. Oh, the stock looks nice now.
But there is a hitch. About a month elapsed from when I started working on it, until it was finished and ready to put together. In the meantime, to save puting the barrelled action in the gun lock up, I just took the bolt out of the Savage and put it someplace out of sight. In fact, it is hid so well that I can't find it!
Several weeks have gone by and no bolt.
I planned on reloading and shooting it. Many years ago I had a bolt action 30-06 Savage which was the spitting image of the 340. The action didn't look all that strong, but it held heavy hand loads. I am puting a side mounted scope on it, so I was looking forward to what it could do, accuracy wise. I certainly wouldn't use premium bullets in a 30-30. For general plinking and targets, I would use 150 grain pointed, something like Remington Core Locke ? If it would ever be used for hunting big game, like moose, I would use standard 170 grain flat nose bullets designed for a 30-30, with maybe a bit more tobassco sauce in them, than is normally used in a 30-30.
Something else I would not do is waste components by "working up," the loads for it. I would simply use one of the well known 30-30 loads and start out at the load I would be using.
Where the bolt went missing is in the basement, where my loading takes place, and is home for tools, guns and much outdoor stuff, etc.
It is also where the cat sleeps at night and I think she must have found my bolt and re hid it! Damn cat won't admit it.
