Hi Guys,

Sorry for the multiple noob 1911 questions... Just got my first one from the CanAm deal, still getting used to the the platform.

During disassembly, is it normal for the slide to get "hung up" when taking it off the frame? I feel resistance when I slide it off, have to use some pressure to take it off the frame. Is there anything I could be damaging by doing this? It's also hard to put back on the frame, gets hung up trying to move it past "battery" in order to line up the disassembly notch with the slide stop.

Also, is there any problem with removing the bushing before you take the slide off the frame? I noticed most people leave it on until the slide is off the frame, I've been just taking it off after removing the recoil spring...

Thanks!

You're OK, the slide will hang a bit near the end as it slides off, and there shouldn't be a problem with taking the bushing off. Those more experienced feel free to correct.

I don't think it makes a difference when you remove the bushing, but I like to keep it in place until I remove the slide assembly so the barrel stays in place. From my experience, there should be no resistance when lining up the take-down notch or sliding the slide assembly from the pistol frame. Do you make sure to remove the magazine and have the hammer cocked prior to disassembly?

How new is the pistol? I do seem to recall very minor resistance when removing the slide when my 1911 was brand new. However, as long as the rails are lubed well enough, the resistance should be very minimal.

Slide can get hung up on the nose of the disconnector if it is rough. It will smooth out with use, or just polish it a bit next time you've done a full detail strip.

That bushing can come off anytime. no worries. They are not a tight fit like some other 1911s (complicating removal).

Thanks for the advice guys! Haven't actually shot the pistol yet, just took it apart to get the grease off...

The resistance seems to lesson when I hold the pistol upside down, could it be the barrel link/recoil guide that's hanging the slide up? Hopefully it will smooth out after I shoot it, should be going to the range this week.

Yep, the barrel legs and link pin can be really rough, too. You won't hurt anything by hand cycling the snot out of that pistol without lube to promote break-in. Then, field strip, clean it, lube it, reassemble and I'd put good money on a noticeable improvement in smoothness.
