22LR Rifle Choice

One thing I will say... I wouldn't recommend going for a $200 rifle if you're looking for something a little more accurate. You're better off spending most of the $500 on a higher quality rifle, and go cheaper on the scope.

I bought myself a Savage Mark II BTVSS and I could not be happier. Thumbhole stocks are often hit/miss for people but I love mine... especially for prone shooting which is like 99% of what I do. All of the Savage Mark II are excellent shooters for their purpose. You should seriously consider looking into one of the heavy barrelled ones.

savage rimfires are made in canada

This shouldn't be a deciding factor on what you buy.

Ive played the savage game. Ive had 4 rimfires and none are still with me. On all of mine fit/finish, and accuracy just wasnt what everyone says. I have had a 10/22 as well got old fast with pop can accuracy at 30 yards.
As the saying goes buy once cry once. My cz will be with me for my lifetime.

Yes in Lakefield, ON

I did not know that, very cool, thanks. It's always nice to buy Canadian when ever possible. This new information will probably now alter my next purchase of a .22 rifle. I've been debating between a Ruger VLEH and a Savage MKII FV-SR, lookin like it's going to be the Savage now.

They really are awesome rifles for what you pay. The accutriggers could use a little work but they're still a really great feature and there's a reason so many other companies have tried to copy it. My MKII BTVSS will punch out the black dot within 50 all day. I have taken many gophers to 75 with little difficulty (after getting range and wind adjusted for correctly) and have landed a fair number of shots around and maybe even past 100. I'm sure a CZ would shoot a little better with a rest and match grade ammo but I doubt the difference is dramatic, especially within 50 yards. Anything over 100 I just switch to my .204... also a Savage with thumbhole stock that will shoot under an inch out to 200 almost any day of the week.

I wouldn't overlook the older gems. Sooooooooooooooo many .22's, and so little time.

Marlin, Mossberg, Savage/Springfield/Stevens, Cooey/Lakefield/Savage, Remington...list goes on. Many of these venerable 'ol .22' are crazy accurate, and available at half your budget. I have a weakness for rimfires, and usually have a float of about a dozen. You can't go wrong with the proven gems.

It will take a lot (understatement) of trigger time before you become more accurate than the rifle. By that time, you'll know what you want in your next one.

Guys - I really appreciate all your opinions and advice! Feel free to keep discussing the issue.
I've been reading lots and it will be an interesting decision. I will see how far I can stretch the budget. There are a couple CZs in the EE...haven't looked for any Savage / Marlins yet.
Like I did mention - still a week or two away (with any damn luck) to getting my licence so I have a bit of time before purchasing.

OP... In your opening comments you requested a gun for "target" shooting... For that, get yourself a CZ 455 (or even better a used 453 or 452 American). You also expressed an interest in lever actions... The basic Henry H001 lever will give you a lifetime of fun shooting (or better yet, for a little more $$$ get the H001T Frontier)... Both the CZ and Henry are guns that you will want to keep.

Good enough till he picks up a Browning.
