Went in to buy a used S&W revolver today that I have been looking at for some time. After checking my PAL, the guy gives me the gun with the trigger lock on a and I start to check it over. The cylinder would barely clear the trigger lock when I opened it so I asked the salesman to take the lock off so I could further inspect the gun. He said no, I can't. So I asked him how I was supposed to check trigger function, lock up etc. if I couldn't access the trigger? He said you can't, after you buy it we will walk it outside the store where we take our trigger lock off and then you are on your own. So I handed it back and walked away. I then spoke with the manager and he said it is store (chain) policy not to let any customer handle a firearm without a trigger lock for the safety of the other people in the store with the exception of muzzle loaders. No wonder their used stuff sits there for months.

Agreed, new I would be more ok with but a used revolver I really wanted to check it out. Its a poor policy for guys who are new to handguns, like myself, and want to get a feel for what fits them better. I will buy from a smaller retailer from now on who is willing to let me handle the guns and see what I like.

I think it depends on who you get I ordered a gun online and picked it up at the store, I put the bolt in and cycled the action while I inspected it. The two ladies at the order desk didn't seem to mind and in fact none of them had a pal and needed to get someone else to carry it to the front. But they did pull out a trigger lock for me after I accepted it to walk it to the front, no biggie.

guy here at the Winnipeg one will let you, I think its because he is an avid handgun shooter and understands why you'd want to feel it with no lock on.

Just be careful who you tell that to! Wouldn't want a good guy doing the sensible thing to get in trouble for going against store policy if this gets around to Cabela's higher-ups!

"...store (chain) policy..." It's what happens when you hire anybody who can breath and pay minimum wage to work on a firearm counter.
"...ok for new guns..." No it isn't.

New or used that's a pathetic policy. Like buying a car without being able to take it for a drive. Some business' are pathetic. Go somewhere else, support the smaller gun stores.

Same policy at SAIL here in Burlington.

COmparing 2 very similar guns, things like the trigger becomes important.

Luckily the guy behind the counter had some sense, and removed the trigger locks for me........

Retarded store policy!
