I shot 2 groups of 5 286 gr lapoua factory rounds all within a 1"
Then I fired 2 5 shot groups of my handloads again firing a 1" group
I had let the gun cool for 5 minutes between groups
Then for some reason there was a click instead of a bang 5 out of the next 15 shoots misfired
The primers looks like it could be a light strike from the firing pin indicating perhaps excessive headspace when barrel heated up?
Another peculiar thing is my starting load indicated pressure signs and choreographed at 2300 FPS
The rest of the factory loads fired with out a hitch even when the barrel was hot
The load was;
250 gr Woodleigh RN
new lapoua brass
56.5 grs. IMR 4064
Winchester standard primer
bullet was crimped in the groove
The gun is a m96 Husky commercial action with a 50mm barrel( 19.5")
anybody have any other theory's
Maybe factory brass was oversized?

We're your primers flush or a bit sunken?

If they were anything but sunken or below edge of the primer pocket then that could have caused your issues.

If factory brass was OVERSIZED, it won't chamber or will be hard to chamber. Was the rifle rechambered from 9.3X57? If so, a headpsace issue may be the fault. The "normal" firing pin protrusion is 0.055"...
BTW, 50mm is pretty short... (just kidding).

The bolt assembly is clean as a whistle
When I put a flat edge across the bottom of the case I can see a gap (primer could be seated too deeply)
The firing pin protrusion is .070 (I don't have anything except my caliper to measure with so I could be off)
It was a factory 9.3x62
I am going to take apart one of the misfires make sure it has a flash hole LOL
If the primer is seated too deep is there a different brand that would prevent this?

you should be seeing the gap(as you describe) on the primer, if seated with no gap then the firing pin would hit the primer deeper and likely not go off.

do you have a picture of the rounds that did not go off, curious to see how deep the primer was hit.

Here are some pictures of the Misfires and some of the handloads compared to the factory
The picture with two are the misfires
The picture with four are handloads (gold primers) one is normal pressure while the other shows greater pressure same load
compared to factory primers are slightly cupped
The only time I have seen something similar is from over resizing brass

I am not an expert, but the two misfires look like light primer strikes to me. The other four look normal to me. Did you feel any extra recoil with the round you say was higher pressure? How tight are the primers in their pockets? A loser primer can get a little more flatten than tighter fitting one, all else being equal.

I agree, I see nothing terrible here. The extrusion on the primer does not look like a pressure sign as the primer is still quite round. You should get yourself a Stoney Point case headspace comparator (now Hornady) and compare fired and unfired cases, if there's an headpsace (or resizing) issue, you'll find out pretty quickly.

My problem is either my rifle has a long chamber or my fresh Lapua was over resized from the factory
I resized my fired brass just enough for a crush fit creating a false shoulder like when forming wildcat brass. I switched to a 270 GR. Speer bullet , CCI 250 primer and used IMR 4895 fired 30 rounds flawlessly 5 rounds averaged 2394 FPS.
The rifle fires factory Lapua 286 gr perfectly with no misfires, although I have to single load them due to my short magazine.
Next problem is how to fire more of my brass so I can fit them to my gun.

In pic
1St is unfired with my false shoulder
2nd fired brass
3rd new factory
The groups not bad just gotta get those flyers under control!

I would suggest replacing the firing pin spring before doing anything else. Somebody may have cut a couple of loops off to lighten the trigger pull. From the photos and what you've described, I agree with the light firing pin strike diagnosis. If you dry fire it, it should be a SNAP! , not a click

I ordered a 22lb. and a 26 spring just waitng for it to arrive, another thing is this Mauser 96 has a cocks on opened kit installed that could be causing the light strikes
