Any info on S&W model 19

sounds like im on the market for some grips and speedloaders! I just gotta find the grips from a store or something. Any recomendations guys? Thanks for all the great info this makes me a happy man!

Just got this model 19 in the mail the other day, shown with my model 624 in 44 special(top). I had one of these 30 yrs ago and always regretted selling it. This one is more for collecting than shooting as was said, a steady diet of magnum loads will loosen it up pretty quick.

soft rubber Hogue finger groove grips work well for small hands and so do the factory smooth finger groove combat grips if you can find a set.

The Hogue grips may be small hand friendly as well. But that same grip fits my L to XL glove hands just great as well.

The Rubber version if you'll be shooting a lot on hot days where your hands will be sweaty. I've used the rubber Hogues on my revolvers in summer day matches. I'd just about be dripping from my hands but the gun still felt stable in my hands. Or if it's a fun thing and you want to add some bling at the same time as a good set of grips then one of the wood options.

Arrends and Herrets are also great options. I've got a set of Arrends grips on another gun and while they LOOK a lot like the stock S&W Target grips the heel is MUCH narrower and ovalized nicely so the shape fits with the pinky and ring fingers far nicer.

Thanks Guys! one last question tho! How does an individual determine the type of frame be it K frame or L Frame? On the barrel it does say .357 magnum only, does that matter?

I believe it's part of the serial number?

There is nothing in the serial number of any of my guns that I would say indicates frame size...unless of course you are referring to the specific combination of letter and numbers as laid out at the factory and who's precise meaning is known to the factory. However, for most of us, it's experience and or searching the number with the maker.

The most common examples are as follows:
Models 19 (blued) and 66 (SS) are K Frames.
Models 586 (blued) and 686 (SS) are L Frames.

My Model 19-4 has a K in the S/N.
My Model 66-1 has a K in the S/N.
My Model 29-2 has an N in the S/N.

As for the newer models, you are right, the S/N does not reflect frame size.

I actually don't know, I took them off and looked all over but couldn't find anything to hint at who made them. Just remember that the 2.5 barrel model 19's are round butts (for concealability) where the longer barreled ones are square butt

That's interesting. I read this and checked a few of my revolvers...none of them have a K or L in the serial number...a couple of 19-5s, 586-1 and a couple of older model 10s.

I ask because I find the best grips for me are narrow front to back, and more rounded.

S&W Model 19

Personally, love the S&W Model 19!

Have owned a 4" model for ~ 30 years [bottom left in pic] and a 2 1/2" snubbie scored off the EE here awhile back.

Top is a Model 586 ["L" frame] 6" with sweet tuned trigger. Far right is a Model 13 ["K" frame] 4" fixed sites.

All four, of course, are in the venerable .357 Magnum.

As stated in other posts on here, I prefer Pachmayr grips for 'shooting' on my S&W wheelguns.
