Picture of the day

Can someone tell me what he is wearing around his neck??

The German MPs were distinguishable by the gorget worn around the neck. They also had paddle-like traffic control sticks. I saw the same sticks used by civilian police in Bosnia. The German troops called their MPs "field dogs".

The gorget is a throw back to suit armour throat protection. In the usage you see here it is a status symbol or privilege of rank, it was common for officers from many nations in the 18th century to wear a gorget as a sign of rank. In the German context it is a symbol of his "unit". It also says loud and clear that "I'm a cop, I'm cool as he11 and I can Fu<k up your day if it amuses me to do so.

Here's a better pic of it:

Man, I want a Kubelwagen. What a cool ride.

To be perfectly korrekt, they actually called them "chained dogs" (Kettenhunde)... The ordinary Landser (German Infantryman) wasn't usually very fond of them...

Dark Alley Dan: I agree with you. Love the Kubel and the Zundapp mit sidecar combo! Someday... ;)

A Kubel would be awesome. Here's a replicar:

And an Italian replica, which I assume comes with horrible electrical and the smell of a dying economy:

And the real deal, in all its spartan, kidney-murdering glory. Shame about that chrome air cleaner:

But this?

I'm conflicted. Do I like this? Is it awful? If I like it, does that make me awful? It makes me kinda sick and horny at the same time, like a picture of Ann Margaret covered in poop and thumbtacks.

I think the ground shook when this one landed. The source says: "A flying Cromwell Mk VIII tank at the Royal Armoured Corps testing grounds in Bovington, England. 1944 "

"Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!"

An awesome picture. That being said, I'd have to think that would hurt like hell to land if you were the driver. It'd be like flying a garage off a cliff.

I saw the Germans stationed in Shilo,MB do that with a Leopard at the Winnipeg Air Show a few years ago. One of them got on the mike after and said "I bet you never thought you'd see a 30 ton tank fly!"

That me109 bug is cool as balls IMO. And I'll take a vintage pic of Ann Margaret covered in anything.

I think Buddy went a little crazy with the decals. Were it mine, I'd ditch all the "Messerschmidt" stuff on the windows and the "Got Mit Uns" on the dash. If people know what it is, they don't need to be told, and if they don't know what it is, they still won't after they see all the Messerschmidt stuff.

A reflector gunsight would be awesome as well. They're available...

And any time is a good time for a gratuitous Ann Margrock pic:

The pictures of the gentlemen in the top hats with the dog cart machine gun in post 2827 are the “Belgian Garde Civique”. They fought in slowing down the German advance through Belgium but were disbanded as the Germans would not treat them as POWs according to the Geneva Convention

A typical piece of terrorism; I guess we could have shot the Volksturm as "francs tireurs" on the same grounds; better actually as the Volksturm usually had no unifrorms.

True, but remember, we were supposed have the moral high ground.... I thought only the bad guys were supposed to shoot boys and old men?

The Allied moral high ground is a myth propagated by the victor. Both sides got their hands VERY dirty.

We really need better emoticons on CGN... I can never really convey my sarcastic remarks as well as I would like... ;)

While all sides perpetrated "war crimes" and had their hands dirty, one cannot ignore that in this instance the German state definitely initiated hostilities, and also had as one of its goals, the subjugation of what it considered the "lesser" races, and the extermination of an entire religious group no matter what their nationality or ethnicity (the Jews). All the while, on the whole (not all individual or unit level soldiers of course) it prosecuted these aims with brutal efficiency.

Make no mistake, I LOVE all German firearms, uniforms, gear, and the German culture and people themselves, but I cannot ignore that many German soldiers committed horrible crimes at the behest of their evil and tyrannical government. It would be disingenuous of me to not admit that the Allies were the "good guys".

Just think though... In 500 years, history will look at the crimes of the Nazis just like we look at the crimes of the Mongols.... Something to think about.

Now... BACK TO THE PICTURES!! :D
