Gun nutz,

MY norinco 1911A1 i received is having issues with both magazines. when empty or loaded the mag will get caught 3/4 of the way up and not fully insert. I must press and hold the mag release button to get it to fully seat. any ideas on how to fix this? the pistol has a lot of very sharp edges and my guess is something needs to be filed down.

Thanks for the input

Do you know how to remove the MAg release ?
If you do -- remove it and then check your mags with no release in the gun

if mags insert and fall free you have checked the mags shape and the frame for snags

then check release for burs or sharp spots (fix sharp spots)

Last resort trim 1 coil off the mag release spring and assemble and try mags again -- Springs in norinco are normaly very hard to compress

if you cut too much off spring replace spring

Sounds like a sharp edge or burr on the release is catching the mags on the way in. I would pull the release apart and do some remedial polishing to take the sharp edges off.

Have you shot the pistol yet? My 1911 mag release was giving me the same issue. The slide release and safety were also very stiff. A good cleaning and 150 rounds at the range wore everything in nicely.

fired 150 round through it and its still an issue. the magazine lip is getting hung up on the protruding mag release catch. replacing or grinding down appears to be the only solution. they really need a hard smack to go in but i do not see much gouging or bendning on the magazine

I had the same problem with my STI Trojan and Target Master. I filed/sanded that protruding lower edge and it's much better now. Still takes a firm push once the magazine reaches the release catch, but it's smooth and much easier. Here's a pic of the mag release from the Trojan modified vs the Target Master as stock. Probably didn't need to, but I used some cold blue treatment on the bare surfaces after.

So to update i have replaced the magazine release and i am still having this issue. i must press and hold down on the release when inserting a new magazine or it will not go in. what else should i look into?

Try filing & sanding down the old mag release to see if that makes a difference.

Either the grip screws protrude into the mag well, or your mag release spring has way too much tension. Look inside the magwell to see if the screws or bushings stick out. Also check if your trigger bow is flat against the sides of the frame and not getting in the way of the mag being inserted. My bet is your spring tension is the problem.

just give them a good slap, they will seat. dont worry you cant injure the gun or mags doing this

i replaced the mag release and spring. i am using the original norc screws with aftermarket grips i will have a look to see if they are in the way. when given the chance i will try another brand of magazine. thanks
