How to pick a 1911 - what makes one stand out amongst the others?

ignore all the bull#### thats been spewed so far - buy a sti trojan and be done with it :)

to rest, i am not going to read back in this thread but my preempt to all your crap is a simple question: which brand (and to some degree the best bang for a buck model in that brand) currently owns in all practical shooting competitions? (where 1911s are in their own category)) - clue: this is a rhetorical question (i.e if your too dense to guess, read above)

colts get by this stupid reputation that they were the first, big whoop! - as far as I am concerned, that mean exactly #### and the first generation of EVERYTHING sucks! i will go as far as putting up a trojan up against the best of breed colt available right now to support my claim. sure i've seen a few colts in competition but 90% were custom rebuilt and rest were weak at best - none made it to top 10 in the classic division.

to the ones that will say IPSC is gamey and no equipment there counts for #### - when was the last time you shot off 20 rounds in the thoracic cavity in under 3 seconds? that is the A zone (the only scoring metric that counts in IPSC, as rest as counted as score down). if you still don't get it, too bad; so sad.

Why so angry? Not enough hugs?

Since putting 20 rounds into anything, anywhere, would require at least one reload in a Trojan regardless of caliber, and a 1-second reload is about 30% faster than Dave Sevigny, that would require split times of significantly less than 0.06 seconds (which is about 3 times as fast as most people are physically capable).

So I guess my question is...when was the last time you put 20 remotely believable words together in under 3 seconds? Because that would also be pretty awesome.

wahahaha i suck and even my split times are .2n ;)

edit, just because i suck my draw and first shot is .9n but that still computes - if any doubt, I will be at silverdale (both your and my home range, PM for details) for OPSL round 5 on Sunday ;)

Not only is silverdale not my home range, it's not even in my home province. Nor is it in the next province over, nor the one next to that. Or the next one.

Also, most people will note that there is actually a significant difference between .2 and .06. I understand you have been drinking, but .06 is FASTER than .2...about three and a half times faster.

So please improve your speed by a minimum of 300% before continuing with this line of thought, because at the moment it's totally, completely wrong.

Although I only own 1 1911 at the moment I am a 1911 fanboy.
It is my favorite platform bar none.

The only reason I currently don't own more is that all the ones I want to own either pop up at inopportune times, need to be privately imported, or custom built.

I'm a little bit of a traditionalist in the sense that I like a 1911 to have the traditional internal extractor.
As soon as I see an external extractor such as on a SIG or S&W 1911 it's a no go.

Furthermore I do not like any added firing pin blocks(FPB) which lead to a more mushy trigger.

There are the Series 80 FPB used by Colt, Para, Sig, Taurus and the Swartz FPB used by Kimber Series II, and S&W.

For a regular off the shelf 1911 my preference goes to Springfield Armory for the above reasons among others.
Lifetime Warranty with great customer service (at least in the USA).
I own a Stainless Loaded model.
The problem with Springfield Armory is finding them in Canada.
In the USA you can purchase a Range Officer for $700 with target sights.

One 1911 I haven't seen mentioned is Infinity (SVI) which are best known for their double stack race guns.
They make some serious single stack pistols whose prices are not for the faint of heart.
CRAFM is the official SVI importer so I've gotten to handle many of them and they feel like the slide is on ball bearings.
The triggers have the shortest resets and are light as a feather.
They are not setup as "carry guns" but we don't have that luxury here in Canada.

Besides them you have the big 4 semi custom houses Baer, Brown, Wilson, and NHC.
If we were talking about guns made by the pistolsmith himself I'd take an Ed Brown over the rest of them.
As for guns made by their staff my first semi custom will be a Les Baer followed by a Wilson Combat.

Wilson combat will work on the following pistols:
Springfield Armory, Colt, Norinco, Wilson Combat, Kimber, Strayer Tripp, and Strayer Voight pistols.
This is because of the quality of the steel and the accurate hole placement of critical components.
